I’m a huge advocate for all things coffee, but since coming to college I’ve realized it shouldn’t be my go-to pick-me-up.
Don’t get me wrong, I never skip my morning espresso and coffee actually does have some benefits. The beans contain natural vitamins that link to a decrease in chronic diseases. Although, drinking coffee every single day can seriously disrupt your sleep schedule, cause nausea, and create a caffeine-dependability. Every so often, it is healthy to swap your usual morning (or afternoon) coffee with one of these all-natural substitutes.
- Lemon and Ginger Tonic
- 3 cups of water
- grate 4 oz ginger
- ¼ cup lemon juice (usually two lemons will do the trick)
- optional: a dash of honey or agave syrup
This is my favorite cure for the mid-afternoon slump. Ginger is key to a natural pep up because it balances blood sugar levels, which reduces fatigue. It is also known to boost your metabolism while removing toxins from the body, a win-win! Lemon juice boosts energy levels and reduces anxiety. Add all the ingredients to a sauce-pan and simmer for 30-45 minutes. It stays good for up to two weeks, so feel free to double the ingredient list and store extras in the fridge. This simple, easy to make drink will become your newest obsession.
- Golden Milk
- 1 cup almond milk (or any other type of milk)
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ¼ tsp cinnamon
- optional: add honey to make it sweeter
Not only does this concoction have major anti-inflammatory benefits, but it improves brain function and mood. Along with all of the other benefits, turmeric helps with memory retention so golden milk is the perfect drink to take to class or chug before an important test. For anyone trying to cut back on their daily dose of caffeine, this is the best option because it has the same consistency as coffee! It’s super easy to make, add the ingredients to a sauce-pan and leave for three to four minutes on medium heat.
Shocker, I know. Matcha is all the rage right now for good reason! It’s super healthy and contains half the caffeine of black coffee. You will feel energized but not jittery. There are tons of different matcha powders available, but the Cha Cha Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder from Goop is delicious and is one of the highest quality powders on the market! All you have to do mix it with boiling water and add a splash of almond or oat milk. Matcha is perfect if you don’t have access to a stove-top because it’s as simple as making tea!
