Picture this: You’re walking down the streets in New York and stumble upon a hipster-esque store with the comfiest denim and quality pieces that change your wardrobe forever. This store is alive and well, and it’s called BALDWIN.
Nestled on the corner of Knox Street and Cole Avenue, BALDWIN is a Kansas City classic that has grown immensely over the past ten years. They have stores expanding the US from LA to NYC and now, they’re taking Dallas by storm! Oh, did I mention the clothing’s been featured in GQ, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Women’s/Men’s Health, Esquire and was a 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist? They’re the real deal, people.
Started in 2009, BALDWIN is a branch off of a successful Kansas and Missouri boutique, Standard Style. Husband and wife Matt and Emily Baldwin had a dream for the perfect denim. This dream turned into a reality, and now BALDWIN is a favorite among many people, men and women, including celebrities (Troy Aikman frequents the new Dallas store).
I stopped in the other day to meet the manager, Kari Mesh, and explore the store. Mesh is the SWEETEST most STYLISH woman alive who has a heart of gold and the best attitude and energy. She has such a motherly vibe, so I feel at home in KC when I’m in the store with her.
The inspiration for the fall season revolves around the countryside Flint Hills in Kansas. It incorporates the rusts, dark greens, sunflower yellows and charcoals from nature. In the store, black designs of flora specific to the Flint Hills decorates the main walls. Cowhide rugs cover the floors and almost all the merchandise is presented on a light wood structure. If you know who the interior designer George Turbovich is, it looks like he designed the place.
stacks on stacks on of what they’re known for: denim.
The store’s most popular gear is the “Kansas City” merchandise from hats, tees and tanks. My favorite pieces from this season, however, are the Imogen Trench and the Dora Coat in Navy. They also carry Golden Goose sneaks, cool sunglasses and totes.
the cult-favorite KC hat now has a Dallas version!!!!
While the stuff is an investment, Mesh explained to me that everything is very versatile, something BALDWIN prides themselves off of. A piece that you buy from this season’s collection can easily be paired with something from the winter or even spring collections to come. It’s all about creating the most fashion-forward, chic looks with the least amount of clothing and fuss, cause who really wants to fuss over an outfit when they’re running out the door at 8am? NOT ME.
If you’re stuck in Dallas for fall break or are just in need of a wardrobe update, stop by BALDWIN and leave with some new goodies.
tgif & have a happy and safe fall break!
