Fashion’s New Colorful Twist: Tie-Dye

March 20, 2019 by

Does anyone remember that birthday party where you made a horrific, every-color-of-the-rainbow, tie-dye t-shirt that you wore once in your life and never again? While those tie-dye jobs were probably a bit elementary and extreme, this spring is the time to channel your inner hippy-self because tie-dye is back to make a colorful splash in fashion.

From Zara to the runways of Prada, Stella McCartney, and Proenza Schouler, tie-dye is saying goodbye to the children’s cotton t-shirts of the ‘90s and 2000s and hello to the couture textiles and exclusive runway shows. If I’m being completely honest, I’m a little disturbed that tie-dye earned its “in” to fashion week before I did. I’m not sure if I’m just scarred from that childhood t-shirt or if I’m just concerned about looking like a Grateful Dead groupie, but I’ve never been a huge tie-dye fan. So, saying I was a little alarmed when hearing this trend had returned in Spring 2019 collections is an understatement. I was prepared to toss my hopes of being on-trend out the window.

I usually don’t like to be wrong (ever!), but thank goodness the rainbow swirled tie-dye that haunts my mind is stuck in the ‘90s because tie-dye is making a comeback with chic colors and complex designs. Today’s “version” of tie-dye is nothing like those rainbow swirls that first come to mind when you hear the word tie-dye. While it certainly still  has an edge to it, it can also have a very sophisticated feel. It all depends on the tie-dye products you splurge on and how you style them!

Tie-dye is a hard thing to wear because there’s definitely a line between fun and sophisticated, and tacky and cheap-looking. So, you must be careful! Here are some items that will keep you on-trend and add some wittiness to your wardrobe without looking like you’re back in elementary school:
