Dressing Your Dorm to the Nines

August 15, 2018 by

Summer is quickly coming to a close and that can only mean one thing…it’s time to channel your inner-interior designer because move-in day is right around the corner!

I’m sure we can all agree that walking into your dorm room for the first time is the most underwhelming feeling. Being surrounded by white walls, unattractive furniture, and horrific carpet makes it almost impossible to imagine calling this place home for the next 9 months. But, please do not let this discourage you because I promise any dorm room can be transformed into the perfect home away from home!

If anyone is indecisive like me, decorating your dorm room can be a real challenge. Do you want white, striped, pink, or floral bedding? A neutral or a bright color palette? Headboard or no headboard? Gourd lamp or candlestick lamp? And I hate to break it to you, but that’s just the beginning. There are SO many decisions and way TOO many options!!!

Usually, I find it easiest to start with bedding BUT you can’t stop there! In order to make this boring, prison-like room a home, throwing a duvet and some pillows on the bed is just simply not enough. You NEED decor! (Notice my choice in words…not want…NEED) You might as well make a new Pinterest board now because you’re going to want it! Here is a mini inspiration collage of ideas that I adore:

SEE, (although these aren’t pictures of dorm rooms) there is so much you can do to transform a tiny, dreary dorm room into a welcoming home. It just takes some hard work and creativity!

A personal favorite decor element is a gallery wall. Gallery walls allow you to get so creative while also putting your own personal twist to the room. If you’re interested in designing your own gallery wall, I strongly suggest looking on Etsy. You can easily find one-of-a-kind prints that don’t bankrupt you!

While you don’t technically have a vanity in a dorm, I’m sure most of us can admit to ditching the desk designated for studying and converting it into a vanity. I’m one of those people who strongly believe a gorgeous place to beautify is necessary. Even just a unique tray for perfumes, mint julep cups for makeup brushes, and a mirrored jewelry box will make the dull study space a charming beauty bar.

There are so many fun decorative accents out there that will add an element of warmth to a room. Personally, one of my favorites are coffee table books. If you don’t want to spend a ton of money on coffee table books, go grab a Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, and InStyle and prop them up with some fun bookends. Also, something that is so unbelievably easy are flowers! Pick some up at Royal Blue, and I guarantee they will automatically give the room a very pleasant atmosphere.

Summer flew by and I know some of you, including me, are scrambling to find some new dorm decor. There’s nothing like some great procrastinating! I have spent an absurd amount of time browsing for decor these past few days, so here are some things your dorm room should not be without!

Listen girlies, it’s crunch time!! If you’re lacking decor at the moment or your room is a little more bland than planned, get shopping. Thank goodness for overnight shipping because it’s time to open up your laptops and do a little damage to your bank account!

toodles,
