Clean Freaks: Makeup Edition

September 30, 2019 by

Welcome back, ladies of SMU. Today’s we have the third edition of our ‘Clean Freaks’ series…this time it’t alllll about makeup.

Now, there’s a lot of clean/organic skincare brands on the market today. As for makeup? Not so much. On top of that, as I mentioned in a previous edition, I hold every product I try, whether it be clean or not, to the same standard. Some of the clean makeup on the market doesn’t have nearly the same quality as makeup that isn’t considered to be clean. Not to mention, the packaging can tend to be subpar – and I am BIG on packaging. All of this being said, I have managed to find some amazing alterntives that don’t compromise on the things we look for when buying new makeup. So, let’s begin.

Primer – Heir Atelier Face Primer – $42 & BeautyTech Cosmetics Skin Energy – $42

The first step of the makeup routine: primer. This demi-matte, long wearing primer leaves skin hydrated and fresh without all the nasty chemicals. Because it’s packed with amazing ingredients, this primer acts as both skincare and primer. Wash your face, pop on this primer and you are ready to begin your makeup routine.

Vegan | Cruelty Free

The Beautytech Cosmetics ‘Skin Energy’ is a super unique concept. This lightly tinted serum is packed with probiotics, hyaluronic acid and cearmides, ensuring that your skin is left perfectly hydrated before makeup application. I love that fact that it perfectly balances your skin’s pH, so you’re not too oily, but not too dry; the ideal solution for my combination skin. I prefer to use Skin Energy as a primer, but you can also mix it in with your foundation for an added glow. And the best part? You can customize your bottle with your name, as well as choose from the selection of matte or glowing tints.

Foundation – Kosas Tinted Face Oil – $42

This ‘foundation’ has become a staple in makeup artist’s kits, and seems to be a favorite of almost every beauty blogger on my Instagram feed. I am a skincare junkie, so their concept of ‘skincare meets makeup’ was music to my ears. This Tinted Face Oil has a light coverage that blurs redness and uneven skin tone, while giving you the healthiest glow. When I say you can’t tell you have makeup on your face, I am really not kidding. The product has a a self adjusting formulation and a velvety finish… what more does a gal need?!

Vegan | Cruelty Free | Gluten Free

Concealer – The Organic Skin Co Hide and Seek Concealer – $53

This little pot of magic works absolute wonders on the darkest of under eye circles. It’s the perfect creamy consistency, but isn’t too thick that it creasing under the eyes. I love the natural finish that blends seamlessly into the skin, which is perfect for the ‘no makeup makeup’ days, but it can be built up for more coverage. This has become my holy grail concealer.

100% Natural | 28% Organic | Cruelty Free

Bronzer – Crop Cosmetics Soft Focus Bronzer – $34 & Kindred Baton de Couleur d’Or – $38

Bronzer is my favorite makeup product by a long shot. Whether you’re running out the door to class, or contouring the heck out of your cheekbones, bronzer is an absolute game changer. This Crop Soft Focus bronzer is the perfect shade for warming up your skin and really faking a summer in St. Barths glow.

Cruelty Free | COSMOS Certified | Sustainable

The perfect tan in stick form. Introducing the Kindred ‘Baton de Couleur’ in the shade d’Or (aka gold). While they come in a variety of shades and can be used on the body and face, I have a special place in my heart for d’Or, simply because it makes you look and feel like 24k gold. It can be applied on top or underneath makeup for a bronzey glow. I swear the VS models must use this product to achieve that perfect beach babe look. It is formulated with mango butter so they glide on ohhh sooo smoothly. I can’t get enough!

Organic | Hand batched | Cruelty Free

Blush – Antonym Baked Blush – $36 & Olio E Osso Balm in Spring – $28

Wow. Where to begin? This Antonym Baked Blush in the shade ‘Peach’ makes your skin look so incredibly healthy. Antonym uses a super unique baking process to ensure maximum radiance. Pigments of pink, gold and champagne are swirled together to create the perfect glow. The color is sheer, which I like for a natural, everyday look, but can be built up very easily. I also love that Antonym makes a point to ensure their shades are flattering for all skin tones!

Certified Natural | Vegan | Cruelty Free

The ultimate ‘no-makeup’ makeup solution. This multipurpose balm comes in a variety of shades from clear, to bright red, to bronze. While I personally use them as a blush or tinted lip balm, their myriad of uses is endless. Made from just a few simple ingredients including shea butter and beeswax, they smoothly glide onto the skin and blend perfectly, giving you a natural wash of color. If you aren’t one to pack on a full face for class, but need just a little pick me up, the Olio E Osso balms are a no brainer.

Highlighter – Organic Skin Co ‘In The Spotlight’ Luminizer in Lunar- $37

If it isn’t apparent already, I live for glowing skin. While I typically opt for a powder highlighter with maximum shimmer when doing a full face of makeup, I prefer a cream product for my day-to-day routine. This creamy luminzer is the perfect shade for literally any skin tone… not too pink, not too gold, not too bronze. To apply, I dab my ring finger into the product and pat over the top of my cheekbones and on my cupid’s bow. While you won’t get that blinding, reflective highlight that some powders can achieve, you get a natural radiance that makes it look like you just have naturally perfect skin. I mean, who doesn’t want that?!?

100% Natural | 73.8% Organic | Cruelty Free

Brows – Plume Nourish & Define Brow Pomade – $42

A strong brow game is extremely important. This Plume Brow Pomade comes with the perfect angled brush that allows you to achieve the brows of your dreams. Use the spoole to disperse the product for a more natural look, or pack the product on to create arches that reach the heavens. Either way, you’ll brows will be…. on fleek. I’m sorry, I had to.

100% Natural | Vegan | Cruelty Free

Mascara – Crop Cosmetics Natural Mascara – $26

Finding a good natural mascara is like finding a diamond in the rough. Most I have tried are flakey, too dry and don’t provide any volume to the lashes. As I mentioned in Part I of this series, I am not going to use a product if it doesn’t work just as well as my favorite non-organic mascaras. I am all for the clean beauty revolution, but I’ve gotta have long, thick lashes… and that’s nonnegotiable. This Crop Mascara is the blackest shade of black, lengthens your lashes to the stars and lasts all day and all night. Yes, yes and yes.

Cruelty Free | COSMOS Certified | Sustainable

Eyeshadow – Dome Beauty Eye Jewels – $25

I am a huge fan of cream shadows because they give the impression you spent hours blending out the perfect smoky eye, when in reality it maybe took 10 seconds. The Dome Beauty Eye Jewels are the perfect consistency; long-wearing, but bendable and creamy.

Cruelty Free | SLS Free | Paraben Free

Lipgloss – Saint Jane Beauty Microdose Lip Gloss – $28

OMG. This lipgloss is an absolute game changer. Formulated with CBD oil, aloe and sunflower oil, this gloss is literally everything a girl could want. Sheer, but not too sheer. Long-lasting, but not too sticky. Moisturizing, but not slimy. Shimmery, but not glittery. I could keep going, but I think you get the point here. I have about 1,000 lip glosses in my makeup drawer but ever since receiving this one, it’s become my go-to.

100% Natural | Non-toxic | Cruelty Free

Lipstick – Kosas Rosewater Lip Stick – $28

The Kosas Rosewater lipstick is the lovechild of a hydrating lip balm and a rich lipstick. Never have I used such a smooth and hydrating lipstick that still packs a punch. The color first applies as a perfect sheer pink, but can be built up as desired. Formulated with Green Tea Seed extract for anti-aging benefits, Rosehip Oil for enhanced tone and texture and Sweet Orange Oil for a mood boosting scent, this bad boy is like a full skincare routine for your lips.

Cruelty Free | Vegan | Gluten Free

And there we have it… a full face of non-toxic, luxurious makeup. Not only will these products leave your skin supple and soft, they also don’t compromise on quality. I am fully on this clean beauty bandwagon and can’t wait to share more with you. Come back next Monday for my clean haircare picks! Until next time…

XO, Lo
