Happy Monday, ladies! Welcome to part four of our clean beauty series, ‘Clean Freak.’ In part one, we discussed what clean beauty is and why you should make the switch. The same applies to haircare. Studies have found that our scalp is extremely absorbent, so the ingredients in our shampoos and styling products, have a straight pathway into our bodies and bloodstreams. Secondly, styling products, such as hairspray are particularly harmful to not only your respiratory system, but also to the environment. Don’t do Mother Earth like that. 🙁
While the clean beauty revolution hasn’t quite impacted the haircare industry as it has skincare, we still managed to find some amazing products to keep your hair fresh and clean.
Shampoo: Rahua Classic Shampoo – $34
This non-toxic, vegan shampoo is loved by so many. Prior to doing research for this series, I had heard a lot about this brand, as they are one of the leaders in non-toxic haircare. This line was created by renowned New York City hairstylist, Fabian Lliguin, after noticing Amazonian women’s gorgeous and healthy hair during a visit to the Amazon rainforest. He asked them their secret and they told him rahua oil. Thus, the beginning of Rahua. This shampoo is simple. But simple in the best way. It’s natural scent lingers in your hair and it lathers smoothly. It’s no wonder it has become a cult favorite among beauty connoisseurs.

Conditioner: Rare Elements Essential Lite Conditioner – $40
I have naturally very thick, long hair. However, it is also very fine and can get greasy quickly. Thus, finding the perfect conditioner that leaves my hair healthy and hydrating, but never greasy is no easy feat. That is why I LOVE this Rare Elements Essential Lite Conditioner. It is the ideal combination; moisturizing but not overly thick and heavy. It is formulated with Marula & Camelina oils that deeply penetrate the hair and leave you with the shiniest, silkiest hair.

Mask: Leonor Greyl Masque Fleurs de Jasmin – $65
Oh. My. God. This mask is truly magical. Life changing, I might argue. As previously mentioned, my fine strands can often be overwhelmed by thick, heavy masks and conditioners. Many drugstore alternatives leave my hair stringy, dull and greasy, almost immediately after washing. I have come to discover that this is likely the silicones and additives in those masks. This Leonor Greyl mask, however, does quite the opposite. I began by applying the ‘Régénerescence Naturelle Scalp Oil‘ to my scalp, then followed with this mask from ears down. I twisted my hair and clipped it up. While it’s recommended you leave in it for 10-15, I got carried away on a FaceTime call with my long distance BFF, so I let the mask soak in for about 45 minutes. I then showered and left my hair to air dry for about 45 minutes before heading to be. Never have I ever woken up with such soft and smooth hair. As I mentioned, my hair is very thick and oftentimes unruly, so waking up with gorgeous, silky hair is a dream come true. Needless to say, I am in love.

Hair Oil: Verb Ghost Oil – $16
Hair oil is likely my most used, most necessary hair products. I apply hair oil after the shower as well as after styling to smooth and de-frizz. The Verb ‘Ghost Oil’ is another cult favorite. The whole ‘Ghost’ range was given its name because the products are designed to essentially vanish in your hair. A clever name and an interesting concept for sure, but does it work? 100% yes. Hair oil can be very tricky because if you over apply your perfect blowout that you just spent 45 minutes create can be destroyed. But have no fear. This weightless, fast-absorbing, strengthening oil is the perfect post-blowout solution to seal the follicles and ensure smooth hair all day long.

Leave-In Conditioner: Evolve Smart Volume Leave-In Conditioner – $29
A Leave-In Conditioner that’s volumizing?! Count me in. This SmartVolume Leave-In Conditioner is a magic potion that helps comb through the knottiest hair without weighing it down or leaving it flat. Because it has a pH of about 3.5, it immediately seals the cuticle for optimal shine and body!
Cruelty Free | Vegan | Gluten Free
Wave Spray: Verb Sea Spray – $16
A salt spray is a necessity in my hair routine, as I often opt for beach waves as my go-to look. Unlike many salt sprays that leave your hair sticky or crunchy, this product is chock full of moisturizing oils that give your hair body and texture, without the dryness. The beachy, fruity scent makes me nostalgic for summer days, and is the cherry on top of this amazing salt spray.

Scalp Scrub: NatureLab Tokyo Shine Clarifying Scalp Scrub – $16
While many of you might not be familiar with scalp scrubs, they are a game charger for healthy hair. We exfoliate our bodies to polish of dead skin cells and scrub our faces to remove blackheads and clogged pores…so why not our scalps?? I became a scalp scrub addict when my dermatologist recommended I use one to help increase the number of days I could do before washing. Essentially, even with frequent washes, sweat, styling products and oils build up on our scalp. This can lead to ingrown hairs, dandruff, and other nasty problems we certainly want to avoid. This foaming scalp scrub is formulated with Sake Water to help restore your scalp’s natural pH, Hyaluronic acid to secure moisture and sugar crystals to remove debris and build up. I recommend using this at the very minimum once a month, depending on this thickness of your hair. Use in place of shampoo and you will be left with squeaky clean hair that is full of body and shine.

Scalp Serum: Yarok Feed Your Youth Scalp Serum – $32
Potentially another product you haven’t tried… a scalp serum. When you think about it, without a healthy scalp, it’s hard to achieve healthy hair. Yes, we want to condition and nourish the lengths of our hair, but it’s just as, if not more, important to encourage healthy hair growth by showing our scalp a little TLC. This scalp serum is formulated with avocado oil for nourishment, vitamins to encourage hair growth and ylang yang oil for anti-aging benefits. Use once a week for 10 minutes before shampooing and conditioning.
Non-Toxic | Vegan | Cruelty Free
Dry Shampoo: Cleo and Coco Dry Shampoo – $14
Dry Shampoo – the ultimate lazy-girl ESSENTIAL. I truly couldn’t live without dry shampoo and that is certainly not a dramatization. The activated charcoal in this product absorbs every ounce of oil, while bentonite clay and essential oils reduce odor. Pour a lil’ into your palms, run through our roots and no one will ever know you haven’t shampooed in 4 days. Your secret is safe with Cleo and Coco.
100% Natural | Non-Toxic | Cruelty Free
And that’s a wrap for part IV of this ‘Clean Freak’ series. Have no fear, we’re not done yet. Come back for part V… ‘Clean Fragrance,’ next week. I hope your week is as fabulous as your hair! Until next time…
