Rush to The Rack

April 21, 2009 by

Psst! Here’s the secret to snagging some goodies from the new Nordstrom Rack — without losing your mind in the process.

-Be patient. You’ll have to sift through racks and weave between other eager shoppers.
-Plan ahead. The dressing room always has a line, and if you go on a weekend you’ll most likely spend some time finding a parking spot.
-Keep an eye out. Like its counterparts Saks Off 5th and Neiman Marcus Last Call, there are some super steals from hip designers just waiting for you to take home and cherish.

Top three reasons to run to the Rack:

1. Rich & Skinny boyfriend jeans: These babies are going fast, so be speedy and get your hands a pair of Spring’s hottest denim. If Rich & Skinny isn’t your style, opt for Seven For All Mankind, Joe’s, Citizens of Humanity, Earnest Sewn, or AG by Adrianno Goldschmeid.

2. Accessories: From flats to sandals and pumps to purses, these are timeless items that will never go out of style. Other great accessories include Juicy Couture sunglasses, Michael Kors bags and Pashmina scarves.

3. Shoes: (Because we might have a fetish) Your tootsies will look trendy in Sam Edelman, Dolce Vita, Havaianas, Reef, Via Spiga, Ed Hardy, Nike, Lacoste … the list is endless!

Your friends will envy all your fashion finds; and they’ll be even more jealous that you paid only half the price.

Nordstrom Rack is located on North Central Expressway east of 75 across from NorthPark Center

A Love Note (To Our Planet)

April 16, 2009 by

There are officially six days until Earth Day (April 22)! I’ve been trying — in my own little ways — to go green, so I’ve gathered a few tips that will ease your shopping bug and show a little love to Mother Nature.

Tote Trendy: If the 99 cent reusable shopping bags from Whole Foods aren’t trendy enough for you, check out Dogeard‘s Natural Tote Bags. Dogeared features a Green Patch on its Website chock full of other earth-friendly fare.

Soap Safely: One of the easiest ways to get on a going green kick is to start using eco-friendly dish soap. Mrs. Myer’s rocks because not only are the products aromatherapeutic but they’re also biodegradable and environmentally friendly. (Hint: that means it keeps our water run-off a bit cleaner) Just a tip: The lavender scented products will have you washing dishes all night.

Clothe Greenly: American Apparel has a Sustainable Edition line. We’re talking all your basic cotton necessities (White T-shirts, undies etc.) made from completely organic cotton. The benefits of organic cotton are endless. Safer for us, safer of our environment and safer for animals. Sounds pretty win-win to me.

Star Lyte Star Bright: Dreamy Headbands

Eve With Flower, Headband by Lyte Accessories, $42

Eve With Flower, Headband by Lyte Accessories, $42

Here’s to adding a little glitz to the top of your noggin. Just call it a make-shift tiara so you can be the princess you know you are.

Lyte Accessories, owned and designed by Los Angeles-based Molly Rhymer, is the perfect answer to the headband rage hitting the ever-fabulous, wannabe Blair Waldorfs out there.

The studded, feathered, bejeweled and beaded hair accessories put a whimsical twist on the traditional headband. I’m imagining they’ll turn any basic outfit from dull to rockin’ instantly. These headbands may take a boost of confidence to pull off but I’m sure topping your head with one of Lyte’s crowns will turn you from shy girl to trendy “it” girl in seconds.

Get ordering and give the Gossip Girls a run for their headband money.

Check out the Lyte Website for looks and be among the first to bring a growing L.A. trend to Dallas.

Chic on the Cheap: Spring Jewelry

April 14, 2009 by

We all have a sweet spot for costume jewelry. And who can resist these fun pieces, especially with such enticing price tags?

Forever21 currently carries some of the most adorable and affordable pieces to add to your spring look. All of these pieces are sure to add a kick to any outfit without leaving a hole in your wallet. Most importantly, although the price is cheap, you’ll be looking anything but.

Light pink pearlescent necklaces and rings flatter spring’s hot “new neutrals” trend. Large bangles, braided bracelets, and medallion necklaces complement the geometric and Moroccan styles seen in many designers’ Spring-Summer 2009 runway collections. And as always, Forever21 carries deliciously gaudy jewelry for any night-on-the-town outfit.

So go ahead — play around with layers, show off some bling, look chic on the cheap!

At these prices you can wear the piece once and love it or leave it.

I have a feeling you’ll be left wanting more.

All of the following can be found at Forever21 in NorthPark Center, but shop Forever21.com for more.

A Piece of Misch

Mischa Barton in a signature headband.

Mischa Barton in a signature headband.

With spring finally here and summer just around the corner, what better way to mix up your winter hair rut than with a floral headband?

My latest obsession: Mischa Barton’s designs for Stacey Lapidus.

Mischa regularly sports a beachy, laid-back hairstyle with an array of headbands for day and night. This year she teamed up with one of her favorite accessory designers, Stacey Lapidus, to create a line that stays true to the Lapidus look but channels her personal LA girl style.

You can get a piece of the OC starlette’s look directly designed by MischMisch herself: Pearls, rhinestones, and beads braided into pastel silk and chiffon fabrics look just like a treasure pulled out of the sea. (You’ll definitely feel a little more laid-back and lighter spirited with one in your hair.)

Mischa’s headbands along with other Stacey Lapidus accessories can be found at Nordstrom in NorthPark Center and at Sebastian’s in Snider Plaza.

Checkout the Stacey Lapidus Website for full collections.

Pedal to the Metal

Beach Cruiser

Need an Outlet for your summer fever, or just a way to calm that overall jitteriness until classes are over? Channel your inner ’60s Cali beach babe and enjoy the kind of stylin’ bike ride the Beach Boys would have sung about.

Fleetwood’s Kit Kat Bike Rentals offers cheap deals for daily and weekly bike rentals and is located right on Mockingbird Lane. Choose a bike from an array of colors like hot pink or tangerine orange. Add some pimped-out detailing, and make pedestrians and car drivers jealous of your wheels.

Free rides down Katy Trail and around Victory Park are offered twice a week, for those who want to pedal while keeping their wallets smiling.

What’s even more rad? Proceeds from bike rentals go towards preserving the Katy Trail. Even Lance Armstrong will think you’re “living strong.”

So grab your friends and take in the sunny skies together. It will make the countdown to summer just pedal by.

Visit Fleetwood’s Kit Kat for more information and rental rates. Fleetwood’s Kit Kat is located at 5214 E. Mockingbird Ln. and is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Happy Trails!

More Than Vintage: Jarma

A Vintage Jarma Necklace

A Vintage Jarma Necklace

It didn’t get much better than playing dress up in your grandma’s gowns and stomping around in your mom’s (ten-sizes too big) stilettos. But now we’re grown up (sigh) and sometimes all I want is an attention-getting piece. Something that shows the time in your grandma’s closet was worth it.

So if you’re like me, and love a vintage find check out Holly Olmstead’s vintage jewelry and accessories line Jarma.

From vintage designer pieces spotted at flea markets to stylish scarves, Olmstead has an eye for spotting the trendiest of items.

Despite the fact that your closet is packed, finding something to wear is a daily dilemma. Stop stressing, Ilana Heller is ready for you to raid her closet. Heller, founder of Closet Culture, has picked up her biz based in Cali and set up shop in Dallas. Closet Culture is the ultimate solution for those – Oh, what to wear? – moments.

Here is the low-down on how Closet Culture works:

1) Closet Culture does a DNA (Designers Needed Assessment) on the SMU student body to determine what brands and trends are popular on our campus.

2) A location is picked on or near campus to set up the closet.

3) Students buy a membership and have access to trendy tops, dresses and handbags. You checkout the goods for the night/weekend return them (similar to website bag, borrow and steal but not virtual).

From Claremont to NYU, Closet Culture is already a running success at Universities across the nation. If you want to be apart of the retail revolution email closet.culture@gmail.com or visit the website closet-culture.com
