Presidential Pick {Carlton Adams}

It’s impossible to miss all of Carlton Adam’s campaign photos, they’re everywhere! From Facebook, to the the Boulevard, and even Insta, his campaign game is as strong as his classic southern SMU style. In his retro glasses (yes, they’re prescription – I asked) and country club chic attire, he is our stylish pick for upcoming student body president! We sat down with Carlton this week to get the inside scoop between cabinet meetings and class and right before elections.



SMUstyle: Tell us about yourself!

Carlton Adams: My name is Carlton Adams and I am a junior Economics major from Dallas, Texas. I am the youngest of 6 kids and I have a twin sister, Kristen, who attends TCU – ironic ha. My dogs, Sophie and Lucy, are both English Mastiffs and spending time with them is one of my favorite hobbies. I also enjoy traveling, spending time with my family and water-sports, like wake-boarding and wake-surfing. I am the proud uncle of three nieces, and hanging out with them is also one of my favorite things to do!




SS: Why did you pick SMU? What made you choose to run for presidency?

CA: In the back of my mind, when I was applying to schools, I always knew I would end up at SMU. I applied to 6 schools, but once I was offered the Hunt Scholarship, I knew SMU would be my final choice. I also have strong family ties at SMU, and they pushed me to attend the school. It was those family ties along with my love for the institution that drove me to run for Student Body President. I know I’m the most qualified candidate for the position, serving as a First-Year Senator, Pre-Major Senator, Membership Chair and Dedman Senator. I have spent all of my Tuesdays here in the Student Senate chamber since I walked onto this campus and couldn’t imagine spending my Tuesday afternoons any other way.


SS: Okay, so give us a low down on your political platform…

CA: My platform has three points: Opportunity, Community and SMUnity. I believe students should be more aware of the opportunities they have both on and off campus. This would be achieved through the All University Calendar and Centralized Resource Center. Community is my second platform, where a safer community is a big focus – improving GiddyUp services, maintenance of lighting on campus, improved crosswalks and a Student Senate Safety Week. Last is SMUnity, the mantra of my campaign! I hope to improve SMUnity by further implementing the SMU Value Statement across campus, making the value statement more visible and highlight the SMU Value Statement during freshman orientation. Also through an All Organizations Day in the Spring. In the Fall we have Night at the Club, but the Spring should have an event just as significant that encourages involvement in the Spring semester. The All Organizations Day would also promote pride in any and all involvement in any of the hundreds of organization on campus. And last, through improving transparency within Student Senate – making any and all information and decisions made in the chamber readily accessible and known to the Student Body.




SS: What role do you think style plays in politics here at SMU?

CA: Style plays into politics at SMU in regards to knowing what to wear and when to wear it. Meaning, what constitutes business casual versus business professional or when it is appropriate to wear what type of clothing.. In my opinion, I would rather be overdressed than underdressed but casual ‘Wear Red Friday’ is always a must ha!




SS: What are three words you would use to describe your style?

CA: Comfy, professional, when needed, and weather-dependent. Nothing is worse than walking around all day wearing something that isn’t comfortable or than wearing too much or too little clothes when the Dallas weather changes, as frequently as it does and nothing is more awkward than being over-dressed or under-dressed.


SS: What’s your favorite accessory in your closet

CA: Definitely a sport coat.




SS: We know everyone loves a good boulevard, but tell me about one of your other favorite SMU past times?

CA: My time on the Student Senate is definitely a favorite past time. This organization has been the reason for many of my friendships and relationships at SMU, and an organization I hope to continue to make memories in it. I am so proud to be a contributing member to this prestigious organization, and hope I have the chance to give back to the Student Senate, as much as, if not more than it has given to me.

Who’s That Boy? [Julian Ryles]

You’ll either spot him on campus with his bike or you’ll just spot him in general for what he’s wearing to class that day.  Let me introduce you to Julian Ryles– a junior from San Francisco, California whose style has a lot to do with where he’s from. Dressing comfortably over dressing flashy is his motto, but let’s be honest…even when he dresses comfortably it’s not your typical t-shirt and basketball shorts. Not only is his style great, but he also has killer taste in music to go with it. (Ask him for song recommendations, you won’t regret it) Thankfully we were able to sit down with him recently to get a glimpse of who Julian Ryles really is.

SS: Who are your style icons?

Julian : Arthur Ash, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Ryan Gosling, and JFK.

SS: What is your favorite piece to shop for?

Julian: Watches. Because like shoes, it says a lot about a person. I’m into square vintage watches and ones that are hard to find.

SS: What would you describe your style as?

Julian: I would say my style is very California-hippie-urban based.

SS: What does every guy need in his closet? And why?

Julian: Every guy needs a good pair of vans. They’re great to just throw on, and even when they’re beat up they still look good.

SS: What is something you absolutely have to bring with you when you walk out the door?

Julian: A nice pair of sunglasses. I use to be big on Oliver Peoples, but the quality isn’t that great so now I really like Persols.

SS: What are you most excited about in 2015?

Julian: I’m excited to hang out with my best friends Rehan, Jared, Austin and Ted. Those guys keep me grounded and they influence me everyday some way or another.

Men of Milan

So… let’s all pretend we took a couple of days off school and traveled to Milan last week to sit in on the Men’s A/W 2015-2016 shows. Literally was dying of fomo while I streamed the videos of the shows from my computer in class. On January 17-20, the city of Milan was #blessed with hundreds of international male models and 40 designers that got to showcase the best of the best–from leather trousers to patterned suits to earth tone, retro-inspired knee-length coats–each collection was flawless.

So, what got you into photography?

Good question… I’m not really sure. I’ve always dabbled around in it, but I suppose I really got into it my freshman year when a friend and I were trying to start a blog. I began learning technique and developing my personal aesthetic, and ehhh I’m okay now.

What are you inspired by?

Grace and Audacity


What are some of your favorite items in your closet?

1) My wide brim hat because it took me forever to find the perfect one.

2) My Lennon sunglasses because so they’re so classic.

3) My patent leather chelsea boots, well just because.


What is your favorite trend for fall?

Harnesses for girls and for guys, the return of the classic gentlemen’s waistcoat. And for all, clear framed glasses (oh yea).

Favorite band at the moment?

Arctic Monkeys always, but y’all know I love my thug music.


What is your favorite accessory?

Depends where we’re going! But overall, I’m a ring fiend, so they’re usually my go-to.


Who is your fashion icon?

It’s a three-way tie between Jay-Z, Lennon, and Johnny Depp.


What trend are you against?

The big t-shirt and running shorts…. come on now.

It Boy {Marco Barrientos}

Double take – is that Nick Jonas walking into Meadows? Nope, it’s Marco Barrientos. And when it comes to style, he knows what he’s talking about. He’s not only the latest intern at our local Tom Ford boutique, but he’s also pursuing graduate school at the ever so prestigious Parsons School of Design next fall post-graduation




SMUstyle: Who is your favorite menswear designer?

Marco Barrientos: Probably John Galliano, but when he worked for Dior


SS: What is your least favorite women’s trend?

MB: The boyfriend jeans


SS: If you could have a meal with absolutely anyone, who would it be?

MB: Probably Cristiano Ronaldo because he’s my favorite athlete from when I was an athlete before I got old and slow

MB: I’ve always like taking pictures but I never knew how to use the camera and I want to be in the fashion industry. I really got inspired by Tom Ford who many don’t know takes almost all of the photographs for his campaigns and stuff

It Boy {Tony Nguyen}

How would you describe your style?

I like mixing designer pieces with affordable ones a lot.  I’ve spent time in New York and London, so my style is a bit all over the place.  From everything, I combined all these ideas of style into a really laidback-prep kind of guy.


Where is your favorite place to shop?

I guess I don’t really have one, but I’ve always liked Club Monaco’s lines from year to year.  Usually, I like to go to random places, whether its online or in-store, and have a bunch of impulse buys.


What’s your must-have item?

Scotch & Soda Ralston black denim


Who is your favorite designer?

I’d say Yves Saint Laurent because it’s classic but posh, combined with good tailoring.  Thom Brown is another good one because his shows are always surprising and full of character and over the top.

Triofive to My City

Handmade and started in Miami (also known as the 305), Triofive Clothing was established in the spring of 2012. Two brothers, Brian and Kevin Seage, and cousin, Stephanie Darna, created a men’s T-Shirt clothing line that features different printed pockets on solid colored T-Shirts. After meeting with the trio and visiting their headquarters, I learned that the dynamic between the three is the secret recipe for success in the business.


“Well I’d always wanted to have my own t-shirts or store, and during Easter of 2012, we decided to go to the thrift shop where we chose some patterns and started making some samples,” said Brian Seage, the older of the two Seage boys.


After they chose out fabrics, cousin Stephanie Darna put her sewing machine to work and began pocketing plain T-Shirts with the help of Kevin. After selling their clothing locally in Miami, both brothers went away for college and branched out their business to their current cities of Tallahassee and Cinncinati. Because of the high demands for t-shirts and their phone orders going off the hook, the trio recently decided to go online, making their line available for all.


“The T-Shirts are just the start of our business. I could only hope that we continue on this path because we have so much fun together doing something we all love,” said Kevin Seage. He later goes on to say, “it started as a hobby, or something fun to do, but through the process we have learned that Triofive has the potential to be more than a hobby.”
