As I’m sure you all have read, the Kaiser of Fashion, the iconic designer, Karl Lagerfeld passed away on Tuesday morning, February 19, 2019.
Dress for the journey.
Federico Canavati, Cox School of Business ’15, has already cemented himself in the fashion and business world a mere two years after graduating from SMU. The Canavati family has years of experience in the realms of fashion, so his success comes as no surprise. He recently founded Mavens Cove, a retail destination for men that specializes in coastal wear for the naval lifestyle. Mavens Cove’s innovative designs and collections dress men for the exciting journey of life; whether it is at the beach, on a yacht ride or in a sailboat competition.
It took a while for me to develop an appreciation and take interest in menswear. How mundane its limits seemed, how repetitive the collections looked. Eventually I began to see the art in it, the stories, the image, the look, and especially in today’s age, it’s evolution. Over the past couple of weeks we have seen our favorite fashion houses define the style for F/W 16 menswear. We saw good, we saw bad , we saw wow, we saw “ehh”, but most importantly, we saw new.
When it comes time to do the gift guides at SMUstyle, everyone shies away from what has become the dreaded boyfriend gift guide. I totally get it– shopping for boys can be so awkward, especially in those early relationship stages. After being forced to do one a while back, I surprisingly have actually grown to enjoy shopping for gifts for our beaus! It takes a while for my overly-girly self to get into the masculine spirit but after some deep meditation and attempts at understanding the male mind I think I did pretty well. There is definitely a variety of presents this year, so hopefully something is perfect for your significant (or not so significant) other so you can check another gift off your list.
Finally, a post for the boys, and with just enough time left to save your chops. If you’re anything like me, you’ve known Halloween was coming up and that you probably should’ve planned ahead but as these things go, you haven’t and oh wait…the festivities start tonight. For us, throwing on a tight get up and some cat ears just won’t cut it for the costume parties, so here a few options that are just as easy, but slightly more fitting.
I mean, we are in the south, right?
Even though I know all boys mainly wear mostly the same thing, it’s time to bring some options to your game-day attire! At SMU we can’t necessary get away with just those SMU tees you can buy at the bookstore or frat tanks we all love so much. If the girls are getting dressed up – you gotta put yourself together too, boys! With the homecoming boulevard coming up this Saturday, bring out the cowboy boots and let’s look into some alternative stylish yet spirited choices.
