It Boy {Tony Nguyen}

How would you describe your style?

I like mixing designer pieces with affordable ones a lot. I’ve spent time in New York and London, so my style is a bit all over the place. From everything, I combined all these ideas of style into a really laidback-prep kind of guy.

Where is your favorite place to shop?

I guess I don’t really have one, but I’ve always liked Club Monaco’s lines from year to year. Usually, I like to go to random places, whether its online or in-store, and have a bunch of impulse buys.

What’s your must-have item?

Scotch & Soda Ralston black denim

Who is your favorite designer?

I’d say Yves Saint Laurent because it’s classic but posh, combined with good tailoring. Thom Brown is another good one because his shows are always surprising and full of character and over the top.

Your Feet Are About to Thank You

At the Chanel Spring 2014 couture show, shown last week in Paris, the world watched to see what Karl would do this time. Known his dramatic sets, the backdrop of the show was shockingly plain. But aside from this surprise, the models, while wearing absolutely exquisite couture that hundreds of hours of handiwork went into, were wearing none other than…sneakers. Of course, these weren’t just any kicks. The sneakers were designed by “specialty atelier Massaro” and were adorned with “lace, tulle, and beading.” While we’ve seen the abundance of Marant wedges and their knockoffs, the rise of Supergas, the comeback of Vans, and the ever-present Converse; these tennies are something new. These are full blown running shoes people. I started wearing my neon green Nike Flyknit Trainers out this past year, and have found that they look surprisingly sleek and sophisticated when paired with items such as metallic leggings, black leather, and minimalist jumpsuits. Always a fan of juxtaposition in an outfit, I am obsessed with the street style snap below of the girl in the tulle skirt and sneakers. Tennis shoes are perfect to wear when for example, you want to look cute while exploring a new city yet don’t want to look like an awkward tourist. I also love that I can wear mine to class or running errands and still be cute and comfy. Get some more inspo on how to rock your sneaks!

Here are some of my favorite picks. I am drawn to tennis shoes that have colors that I can see matching my wardrobe. For example, the first pair of Air Maxes would look great with all of the gray in my closet; and the multicolored Nikes would look cool with all black.

DAY 4: PREF DAY

When it comes to Pref, all bets are off. I think officially Pref is “cocktail attire” but all I hear is “lesgo crazy!” Now I’m all for personal style flare, but NO, I repeat, NO this does not mean wear your sexy-fied Friday Night Avenu Best. Pref is a day to showcase that classy girl you are— think clinking champagne at brunch with the girls or a meet-the-parents-in-Midtown type of get-up. Still, while most girls were stumbling around in LBDs and basic pumps, I wore this last year and you can wear something just as cool! After rush, I had girls I’d never met before coming up to me saying “OMG! You were the girl that wore the neon dress and leather jacket! That was so cool!” My advice for Pref? Take the bull by the horns and dare to wear something that makes you stand out.

It Boy {Charles DuPont}

Charles DuPont, sophomore and L.A. native, brings his California-cool street style to campus. Charles is the owner of his own clothing line, Long Awaited. He has been interested in fashion and design starting at a young age while growing up around his mother who attended FIDM and majored in fashion design. At 15 and a sophomore in high school, he got together with his friends and started Long Awaited which is sold online and in stores in Los Angeles. Long Awaited reflects Charles’ personal effortlessly cool, street style vibe. And it just keeps getting better! Not only does he own his own clothing line, but he also owns an aftermarket car designing service, where he designs people’s cars for them.

I like shopping on Fairfax in Los Angeles. All the good street wear is there.

Mix + Match {Closet Game Edition}

We are girls. We all say it at least once a month (or more). “I don’t have clothes, I need to go shopping NOW”. Although shopping for a new closet is always nice, we can’t do it every other day…. so we need to play smart and do some mix + match. This fun game has saved me many times, plus I find it extremely useful and creative. With simply 3 tops and 5 bottoms, you can create 15 different outfits! Did I mention how different they all can be? I chose these three knitted tops, two pairs of jeans, black leather leggings, and two skirts to mix + match. We all have basic essentials like these, yet if we know how to combine them and when to wear each different combination, these essentials will turn out to be pretty effective and fashionable for the different occasions. We will save ourselves from having to go to the mall by creating outfits that look way-too-different each time you wear them as you combine the same pieces from your wardrobe.

I LOVE the color blue, so I picked this one for the example. You can rock this leather & cashmere sweater in so many ways.

A date? Wear your black leather leggings and you are good to go!

Night-out? Just wear a leather skirt, high heels and accesorize… You’ll look stunning

School? Throw on some jeans and this comfy sweater for your 8 a.m. (Yeah, that’s my case zzzz..)

Boulevard? Wear your SMU colors and simply add a denim circled skirt for a chic look

Sunday? Wear some gray jeans + sweater and feel & look comfortable (Because that’s what a Sunday is all about)

Two Jackets Three Ways: A Visit to The Shak

Jackets are essential to any wardrobe, and can be the perfect piece to complete your look. With the weather starting to really cool down, it’s time to go shopping for this season’s hottest threads. So we strolled to The Shak in Uptown to check out what wonderful finds they had to offer. The store is a segment of Stanley Korshak, aimed for a slightly younger crowd, including the most fabulous pieces and jewelry from some major designers. With top quality personal shoppers and racks filled with hanging treasures, The Shak is A MUST GO to fulfill all of your retail desires.

Our SMU Style Costume Contest Winners, Megan Young and Tia Shay (who so superbly dressed up as toddlers in tiaras) got to model for our photo shoot fully clothed by designs available at The Shak. We picked out two signature jackets, and three corresponding outfits that show off a few different ways to rock this season’s outerwear. Check out how we changed these toddlers in tiaras, to queens of The Shak.

Tia modeled this tweed jacket, flawlessly complementing her preppy, A-List wardrobe.

Megan’s outfits and leather jacket were more ideal for that edgy but über-chic betch.

The First Look: School Daze

Tia’s black and white preppy-chic outfit is gorgeous yet business professional, ideal for Einstein study breaks in Cox.

Megan’s semi-backless top and black ripped skinny jeans are also work perfectly for any after school adventures (a.k.a. a so called “quick stop” by The Shak).

The Second Look: Time Two Party

Megan’s leather blue pants PERFECTLY compliment the jackets neutral colors and the sleek shine of its jet black sleeves. Her clutch—prime; the crocodile-skin cherry on top of a night on the town.

Tia’s beautifully bejeweled dress is optimum for a fun dinner with friends, and with her fabulous jacket it easily transitions her outfit into a cozy yet club-ready showstopper.

The Third Look: On The Go

Weekends and days off are the premium chance to run all of your errands, and look hot while doing it.

Megan looks amazing with her dark yet simple colors. Those double zipper pocket jeans were actually unreal along with that black tortoise shell mesh top screamed style and sass.

Tia’s loose and printed blouse and flare jeans, not only looked so cute but comfortable too.

Whooo’s that Girl? …it’s Jess!

Sorry Zooey Deschanel, but you got nothing on this Jess! Meet SMU’s very own Jessica Jan and let her Asian persuasion and carefree attitude entrance you. She’s far away from the mess she claims to be, and her ever-evolving eclectic style is all about her world travels, Taiwanese background, and even her possible hoarding problem. Her day-to-day outfits really start to define what persona she takes on – even if they take a little while to put together… but who wants to be on time for class anyway?

SMUstyle: When did you first start being this super stylish fashionista?

Jessica Jan: Haha I don’t know! I remember being really into that show, Kell on Earth, with Kelly Cutrone? And from there it just became an obsession! My friend Pablo and I would literally sit in his room all day and watch runway shows on YouTube and start critiquing them and pretending we were there and then trying to style my outfits based on everything we loved! Spending the summers in Taiwan with my grandmother she also really took me under her wing and showed me where to get the good stuff

SMUstyle: Do you think your heritage influences your style?

JJ: Well, yes and no! Asian fashion is really, like, feminine and pink and lacey and kinda girly which isn’t necessarily my thing but I love all of their color schemes! And all of their pattern mixing – it’s all about mixing polka dots and stripes and making it all work somehow. I’m influenced more by like The Sartorialist blog – I literally stalk it! And I’m all about Lookbook.nu – I love that website!

SMUstyle: What’s your favorite thing to shop for?

JJ: That’s so hard!!! I can’t decide! I just don’t really go shopping for basics – like you can always find a white tee shirt, or jeans but I like to pick out the stranger things. Fashion is changing every year and there’s n
othing you can do about it, so why not buy into the different ways of fashion. There’s not like one specific thing I can say is my favorite – I buy whatever I see!

Not Your Boyfriend’s Jeans

In the complicated world of finding the perfect pair of jeans, I’m all about pulling out your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans on those way-too-common “I don’t want to get out of bed let alone get dressed” days that always seem to haunt me. But I think we all have to understand the fine line between actually looking like your boyfriend (mmm maybe not so cute) and making his jeans look chic and presentable.

Some trends are definitely easier said than done when flipping through Pinterest and countless fashion blogs (definitely check out Man Repeller and We Wore What), but this is one that’s too easy and comfortable to pass up! Gypsy Magic

Hey ladies! And the most fashionable of ‘gents…

So, since last week’s “One Skirt, Three Ways” article (written by my BFF Daniela) was such a fabulous hit we set out to do another this week.

Our location: Gypsy Wagon!

Located on North Henderson Avenue, Gypsy Wagon is a sun-soaker’s, music-festival-attendee’s, fish-tail-braider’s and overall it-girl’s paradise. They carry anything from Mexican sugar skull embroidered pillows to sexy-fied tour-bus-ready jumpsuits (and EPIC headpieces, which we’ll get to in just a minute). Adriana, Daniela, Isabelle, Schuyler and I headed down the 75 to Gypsy Wagon for a day of dressin’ up and gettin’ down.

While we attempted to do a similar post as last week, we simply loved too much. Hop on the Gypsy Wagon and we’ll be right on our way to show-stopping attire for any occasion!

A Flair for the Dramatic

I hesitate to label this look because it is just so versatile. We wanted to keep with the Gypsy Wagon mantra of carelessly cool so we paired this satin stunner with an epic turquoise belt and went barefoot. We could stick Isabelle in the VIP Beer Garden at Coachella and she wouldn’t skip a beat (with that headpiece?! I mean, hello!). At the same time, slip on a pair of Loubs, toss on a sparkly statement necklace and work that open back and you are ready to strut the red carpet.

Casually Cool

This look is ready for a night of gossip and margs with the girls, a lazy Sunday of SATC and cinnamon rolls on the couch, or for that class with that guy that sits in the front row that’s, like, kind of into me, but idk maybe he’s actually just looking at the clock….? Earth to you, unconvinced girls: he’s staring at you! (Or will be if you wear this…) In this outfit, you can be comfortable, classy, and ready to wow wherever you go.

This screams “model-off-duty” and I freakin’ love it. Personally, hats are my go-to. By throwing one on, you look effortless cool and immediately superior to what would have looked like without it. Isa works the clashing prints in the uncomplicated fashion I desired to shoot. It also helps being tiny, beautiful, and naturally adept at modeling 😉
