Boulevard Style

Red + White + Blue

September 13, 2016 by

The most amazing time of the year is finally here. This year, as opposed to others, our first annual white-out boulevard is late in the September calendars. Meaning that this coming boulevard has been very much anticipated and all of us are SO READY for it.

Although some boulevard staples include instas, brunch, mimosas and frats, there’s no doubt in my mind that boulevard truly means style, fashion, and dress to impress.

Back to School Cool

September 7, 2016 by

We all dread waking up, throwing on your cleanest pair of sweats, and running to class the first couple weeks of school. But now that we are all seasoned veterans, and survived syllabus weeks (yes plural)– it’s time for us to get excited to get dressed, not snooze those alarm clocks, and finally look like half decent human beings!  Continue Reading

About Nati Bru

Pint-sized Cuban, born and raised in the 305. If you don't know the area code, look it up. I spend my free time arguing over which Kanye album is his greatest work and which character from Game of Thrones should be brought back from the dead. I would rather stay in from a night out on the town if there's a promising SNL host. I am most likely seen with my hair up; if it's down, I'm having a rare, good hair day. Hoping to be on a TV screen near you. Stay tuned.

Lazy Day Outfits: Springtime Edition

April 18, 2016 by

As much as I want to stay in my PJ’s all day, I still like to get semi-dressed for the day. I used to get more put together for class in high school, a demise which began my senior year when I started boycotting makeup during the week. Since then, I’ve become an expert at feeling like I’m in my pajamas while also not wearing Lulus to class. I threw together some easy outfit formulas that will keep you looking semi-put together and fre$h while staying comfy. These are also great for travel days and running errands. One rule of thumb for me: keep one body part covered. Maybe I’m the only one who freezes to death in class, or even worse, in the grocery store **shivers** but this formula usually keeps me semi-warm inside and semi-cool outside. Continue Reading

Looks for Colder Weather {BLVDs}

November 4, 2015 by

With the not-so-hot weather ahead of us, we will see new looks and styles for the coming Boulevards. Although outfits for BLVD’s are typically white dresses and cowboy boots, I want to take advantage of the cold and make the outfits even more fashionable and trendy. Take a look.

I’m Bringin’ Summer Back

September 3, 2015 by

Sitting in class the second week of school is absolute torture.

You’re already missing the carefree (and slightly hazy) days of syllabus week past and you’re not quite ready to move on to the frenzy of tests, quizzes, and homework rapidly approaching. On one side you’re really trying so incredibly hard to pay attention to what your professor is trying to explain, but on the other side you’re still day dreaming of that absolutely perfect day you spent on the beach with a frozen daiquiri in your hand what seems like two days ago. (I mean, it was two days ago… Right?!) Essentially, you are inexplicably suffering from the one thing the health center cannot cure – Split Screen Sadness.

While Split Screen Sadness is quite hard to remedy, the best way to ease the pain is by keeping some of our favorite summer trends around for just a little bit longer. Here’s our edit of the top summer trends that should make a big comeback this fall while the weather’s still warm and white is still accessible before Labor Day on Monday! Continue Reading

Presidential Pick {Carlton Adams}

March 31, 2015 by

It’s impossible to miss all of Carlton Adam’s campaign photos, they’re everywhere! From Facebook, to the the Boulevard, and even Insta, his campaign game is as strong as his classic southern SMU style. In his retro glasses (yes, they’re prescription – I asked) and country club chic attire, he is our stylish pick for upcoming student body president! We sat down with Carlton this week to get the inside scoop between cabinet meetings and class and right before elections.

SMUstyle: Tell us about yourself!

Carlton Adams: My name is Carlton Adams and I am a junior Economics major from Dallas, Texas. I am the youngest of 6 kids and I have a twin sister, Kristen, who attends TCU – ironic ha. My dogs, Sophie and Lucy, are both English Mastiffs and spending time with them is one of my favorite hobbies. I also enjoy traveling, spending time with my family and water-sports, like wake-boarding and wake-surfing. I am the proud uncle of three nieces, and hanging out with them is also one of my favorite things to do!

SS: Why did you pick SMU? What made you choose to run for presidency?

CA: In the back of my mind, when I was applying to schools, I always knew I would end up at SMU. I applied to 6 schools, but once I was offered the Hunt Scholarship, I knew SMU would be my final choice. I also have strong family ties at SMU, and they pushed me to attend the school. It was those family ties along with my love for the institution that drove me to run for Student Body President. I know I’m the most qualified candidate for the position, serving as a First-Year Senator, Pre-Major Senator, Membership Chair and Dedman Senator. I have spent all of my Tuesdays here in the Student Senate chamber since I walked onto this campus and couldn’t imagine spending my Tuesday afternoons any other way.

SS: Okay, so give us a low down on your political platform…

CA: My platform has three points: Opportunity, Community and SMUnity. I believe students should be more aware of the opportunities they have both on and off campus. This would be achieved through the All University Calendar and Centralized Resource Center. Community is my second platform, where a safer community is a big focus – improving GiddyUp services, maintenance of lighting on campus, improved crosswalks and a Student Senate Safety Week. Last is SMUnity, the mantra of my campaign! I hope to improve SMUnity by further implementing the SMU Value Statement across campus, making the value statement more visible and highlight the SMU Value Statement during freshman orientation. Also through an All Organizations Day in the Spring. In the Fall we have Night at the Club, but the Spring should have an event just as significant that encourages involvement in the Spring semester. The All Organizations Day would also promote pride in any and all involvement in any of the hundreds of organization on campus. And last, through improving transparency within Student Senate – making any and all information and decisions made in the chamber readily accessible and known to the Student Body.

SS: What role do you think style plays in politics here at SMU?

CA: Style plays into politics at SMU in regards to knowing what to wear and when to wear it. Meaning, what constitutes business casual versus business professional or when it is appropriate to wear what type of clothing.. In my opinion, I would rather be overdressed than underdressed but casual ‘Wear Red Friday’ is always a must ha!

SS: What are three words you would use to describe your style?

CA: Comfy, professional, when needed, and weather-dependent. Nothing is worse than walking around all day wearing something that isn’t comfortable or than wearing too much or too little clothes when the Dallas weather changes, as frequently as it does and nothing is more awkward than being over-dressed or under-dressed.

SS: What’s your favorite accessory in your closet

CA: Definitely a sport coat.

SS: We know everyone loves a good boulevard, but tell me about one of your other favorite SMU past times?

CA: My time on the Student Senate is definitely a favorite past time. This organization has been the reason for many of my friendships and relationships at SMU, and an organization I hope to continue to make memories in it. I am so proud to be a contributing member to this prestigious organization, and hope I have the chance to give back to the Student Senate, as much as, if not more than it has given to me.

More information on Carlton and his campaign can be found at his website or on his Facebook page! Don’t forget to vote in the elections on April 1st and 2nd!!

Freshman Rules {Blair Croce}

October 7, 2014 by

Meet Blair Croce. She’s one damn cool SMU freshman. Not only does this Dallas native look like a total bad ass, but she is one too. She already earned herself the position of The Daily Campus’s Arts and Entertainment Editor in her first week here at SMU… smarty. So naturally we had to get to know this chick who clearly knows what she’s doing.

SMUstyle:What has been your favorite thing at SMU so far?

Blair Croce: I am really enjoying the film program here. I actually just completed my first short film, and it was terrifying and exciting at the same time.

SS: Tell me about how you became the Arts and Entertainment Editor of the Daily Campus.

BC: I’ve always been interested in writing about the arts. I applied for the associate A&E position, but was promoted when my boss quit the second day. Considering I’m only a freshman, it was scary in the beginning, but I love what I do now.

SS: Being from Dallas, what’s your favorite restaurant here?
BC: I’m a foodie, so definitely have more than one. I love Hibiscus (steak/seafood), Malai Kitchen (thai), Taverna (italian), and Nobu (asian).

Untitled-1dress (similar)/hat/jacket/boots

SS: Who is your style icon?
BC: My style icon is actually one of my friends. Her name is Blanda Eggenschilwer, and she is a graph designer from Switzerland. Check out her instagram @blahblahblanda.

SS: How would you describe your style?
BC: I would describe my style as classic feminine with a modern twist. And lots of leather. Give me a leather jacket, and I might not take it off.

SS: Has your style evolved since coming to SMU?
BC: I love heels. However, waltzing around campus on stilettos didn’t work for me the first week. I now wear more booties, and when I really need to get something accomplished, I break out my black converse. I love the cute dress with sneakers combo.

SS: What is your must-have closet item?
BC: As previously stated, I love a good leather jacket. I bought a dark navy one from All Saints (a favorite store of mine) a couple years ago and still wear it all the time. I like that it looks like black, but is slightly different from the norm.

Be sure to watch out for Blair around campus, for she is definitely going to be making a statement wherever she is.
