Saint Ann and This Weekend’s Formal Frenzy

November 18, 2013 by

As expected, the SMUstyle team convened yesterday for our weekly staff meeting. With the break in what feels like sub-zero temperatures for this So-Cal girl, we decided to hold court over at Saint Ann awesome patio. Located just a block away from the Crescent, this converted schoolhouse boasts both a trendy Uptown-atmosphere eatery and art museum on the second floor. With cozy fire pits and a life-sized chessboard out front, Saint Ann would be an eclectic spot to surprise your girlfriends with next Sunday brunch. Count me in on that next round of Skinny Basil Lemonades!

Located at 2501 N. Harwood St., Saint Ann is a cozy and romantic joint that feels centuries away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Dallas

Had to snap these killers– only Shannon could pull these off. Hate/love her.

This week stay tuned because we have a lot coming at you! It is officially formal season and the mayhem has taken over. This weekend, we will be covering most stylish of SMU celebrities at the most decadent of events— Phi Delt’s New Years in November, Fiji’s Black Diamond, Kappa and Theta’s Kite & Key, Chi Omega, Sigma Chi, Tri Delta… pardon my Greek. To deter any mental breakdowns, we’ll be delivering outfit inspirations, make-up ideas, go-to glamour punches with sick costume jewelry, and other doses of daily SMUstyle inspiration. And don’t forget to make sure your date looks just as hot as you do— this time the boys are taking it back with Best Dressed: #SMUstyleapproved Gentlemen’s Edition.

Also, don’t miss SMU Retail Club’s fashion show tomorrow at the Meadows Atrium at 5:30 PM.

The After-Breakfast Club

November 4, 2013 by

Sunday morning, the crew commenced for brunch at Hacienda on Henderson.

As we relished in epic Halloween experiences, we snacked on some premium chips and salsa.

Located no more than 3 miles Southeast of campus, Hacienda is the perfect place to chill out, have a drink and enjoy some great Mexican food.

They also offer a vegan menu, giving healthier options that are equally as delicious.

Sky’s Sunglasses = Major

Their Spanish themed decor adds the perfect touch to the relaxed atmosphere (ideal after last week’s test frenzy).

The team reviewed the SMU Style Halloween Contest submissions and planned a few exciting events.

We’re feeling like November is going to be an amazing month, so enjoy the cold and get ready to break out your coats.

Wishing you our best,

The SMU Style Team

You Ate It…. Now Negate It!

Caught your eye didn’t I?

So yesterday I came across something brilliant…..

My friend Samantha Donat posted quite an intriguing table on her Facebook. When I inquired, she told me her mother, Jennifer Donat, was a personal trainer at a gym called Vivre in Palo Alto, California. Her mother sent this along to remind Samantha that everything has a consequence! I immediately thought I had to share.

And the spookiest part of all? This table is based on mini, bite-sized or “snack-sized” portions, NOT the real thing!

Lay off the candy this Halloween or get that booty to the gym!

Sunday Sunsets & Toko V

October 21, 2013 by

This week the SMU Style team enjoyed a Sunday evening perched right above Highland Park Village in it’s trendy new Asian-inspired tavern. With Halloween creeping up and the weather (finally) allowing us to strut our fave fall outfits, the team had plenty to plan and discuss.

Toko V has renovated the upstairs portion of the former Marquee Grill into a modern eatery, ideal for the SMU social scene. Located just above the Highland Park Village Theatre, this bistro proposes an elegant yet upbeat feel for its guests, complete with fantastic cuisine and immaculate service. From the lighting to the furniture, Toko V invites all to indulge in fine food and good conversation.

While discussing plans for new stories and shoots, we devoured a few decadent dishes and sampled some phenomenal cocktails. The menu offers a balanced variety, ranging from simple shared plates to well portioned entrees. Their incredible cocktails can quench any thirst and explore unique flavor combinations, influencing guests to engage in another treat. Best of all their cuisine is not only healthy and made fresh, but also reasonably priced, making Toko V a key component in the Dallas restaurant domain.

Whether grabbing some sushi with a friend or enjoying a cocktail going out, this gem promises a good time. Through the course of this week, we urge you to all keep stylish in this gorgeous fall weather and to make plans to check out Toko V, the New Asian Restaurant.
Love always,
The SMU Style Team

Follow the Leaves-er: Company Cafe

September 23, 2013 by

This Sunday the team headed out for an afternoon of Summer Beers and maybe a side order of those delicious fries but somehow we ended up across the street from our original destination…

the Company Cafe

Follow the embeded trail of oak tree leaves and you’ll arrive at this hidden gem located just across from Katy Trail Ice House:

Company Café.

The atmosphere was more lax than KTIH but just as enjoyable. No hacky-sack toss or TVs, just good food that’s good for you. This sign says it all:

"fresh natural clean-cut comfort food"

the harvest salad

The cutest accessory to this outside, open-air patio? It’s location just off the Katy Trail. Hip moms, rambunctious kids, and drool-worthy men (usually power-walking the trial with their obnoxiously fit girlfriends **sigh**) whipped right past our line of sight. For me, people-watching is always a plus.

If nothing else, we enjoyed the first lapse in 90-degree heat! Happy fall, everybody, we actually made it! We discussed some awesome upcoming ideas like pop-up shops for formal (ohh-lala!) and other fun shenanigans!

love always,

HG Sply Co.: Lower Greenville’s Sick New Stop

September 16, 2013 by

This Sunday, the SMU Style team reconvened for its weekly meeting and chose Lower Greenville’s HG Sply Co. as its watering hole.

DSC_0029HG Sply Co. 2008 Greenville Ave.

I’m just gonna say it— this place is effin’ awesome. The food was fantastic, the people were kind and genuine, and the overall atmosphere just worked. Think Restoration-Hardware-meets-Pottery-Barn: mason jar shot glasses, natural wood, chalkboard menus, and industrial patio fans.

DSC_0018the featured cocktails are a definite yes for next time

Since acquiring the two buildings next door, HG Sply Co. plans to expand the rooftop patio. Renovations are scheduled to be completed by late November and will include an enormous mirrored wall upon entering the patio mirroring the Dallas skyline located south west of the restaurant.

DSC_0045at HG, natural wood and rusted metal just works

DSC_0060only one word to describe the cafe string lights dangling above the patio: love

But let’s get real and get down to what everyone wants to see— the food. And yes, it was all fantastic. From crisped pork belly (my favorite) to roasted fig and polenta, to the make-your-own bowls (I went with quinoa pilaf, pulled chicken, spicy broccoli and an over-easy egg to top it off); each and every plate was a success.

The team over at HG Sply Co. treated us all like family and we will certainly be back.

The Daily Juice

April 4, 2013 by

Dallas is getting healthier by the day! Since moving to here roughly a year and a few months (give or take)– about 5 new health food fetishes of mine have emerged. Today I’m talking about J U I C E. The newest health food craze to take over America. C’mon who really sits there and eats 3 servings of veggies a day? But when combine in a delicious green drink and disguised by flavors like apple and lemon it makes the task a pleasure…..

I mean you can even now get drive through green juice at Start, or fresh made at I Heart Yogurt …who would have thought!

Not to mention the added bonus of juice being the ultimate hangover cure…seriously what are you waiting for?

The Cedar Social

December 3, 2012 by

Category: Date night

Attire: Hipster chic

Atmosphere: Urban trendy

Rating: 5 out of 5

Comments: Best drinks in dallas

The excitement started when walking up to this industrial building. Walking in we did not expect the intimate interior centered around a blazing fire and full bar. Located in lower downtown, the scene was very artsy and edgy with a great looking crowd.

Michael Martensen, the head mixologist, is nothing short of a genius. Famous for his magical drink concoctions, this master can create any cocktail beyond your wildest imagination! The number four and the celery cup were the clear winners on the menu!

While the cocktails are the main attraction, don’t blow the food off just yet! Chef John Tesar is working furiously in the kitchen to keep the menu updated with the freshest seasonal ingredients. This seasons must try dishes include: The truffled Mac&cheese, Braised short rib, and Oxtail raviolli.

Would run back in a heart beat! Whether it’s a romatic date or girls night out, Cedar Social is sure to never disapoint! Check out the menu
