Family Weekend is upon us! Which usually means a lot of alcohol upon us, as well. Looking back, I have memories here and there of my dad’s frustrated face smashed in a crowd at Barley and my mother looking disdainfully upon the Coors light in her hand mid-Montaigne Club. So let’s be honest, your parents are not trying to turn up at Avenu or get down at Homebar this weekend. Spare them (and you) the embarrassment and bad alcohol and take them somewhere a little *swankier* to sip up some luxurious libations. And maybe let them pick up the tab, too.
The Wine Gods have answered our prayers.
Are you dying yet? Because I know I for sure did when I visited the jaw-dropping Veritas Wine Room last Thursday night. This was my first time going to a wine room in Dallas and let me tell you…Veritas is now going to be my second home. Located on North Henderson Avenue, Veritas Wine Room is the prime spot to go to if you are looking for delectable wines, full-flavored beers, exotic cheese + meat plates, melt-in-your-mouth desserts, or even just a place to relax and unwind from a rough day. (the aroma of the wine room + the beautiful bottles that surround you really help I swear)
Don’t be fooled by the size of the wine room from the outside, because once you step inside, you will finally realize that a wine heaven does exist. Inside Veritas, you will find two walls completely covered in 350+ wines that are sectioned off by their country of origin: France, Australia, Italy, South America, New Zealand, Spain, and the West Coast. You will also find Ellie, the manager of Veritas and her exceptional team of certified wine specialists.
Ellie graciously took some time out of her night to take us step by step through the ultimate Veritas wine tasting experience.
First, the wine. We started off with a 2011 Catena Malbec Vista Flores Mendoza from Argentina (left) and a 2012 Noble House Riesling Mosel from Germany (right). The Malbec had a rich and well balanced flavor while the Riesling was more on the fruitier side with hints on apricot, peach and tangerine.
Most popular red wines:
-2012 Hilanda Monastrell Jumilla from Spain
-2011 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon from California
-2009 Vina Herminia Excelsus Tempranillo Rioja from Spain
Most popular sparkling wine:
–Albert Bichot Cremant De Bourgogne Brut Rose from France
Most popular white wines:
–literally try all of them, they’re all amazing
The best thing about their cheese + meat plates (besides the actual food) is that you can mix and match whichever cheeses and meats you want, or opt out if you’re not really a cheese expert and go for one of the combo set plates they have already put together.
The seeded cracker with the Belletoile cheese (pictured above) from France was to die for. This was hands down my favorite cheese. Pair this cheese with anything salty and a glass of Riesling for the perfect girls night in.
Hand churned from a creamery in Dallas, the Goat Log with Fresh Herb cheese (pictured to the left of the cracker) is a Dallas classic. This cheese acts as the perfect topping to your meal and compliments any light wine. This cheese + the apricots = life changing.
The Gouda with walnuts featured on the right of the plate had a very wintery and mild taste to it. Gouda is one of those cheeses that can be eaten by itself and acts as the perfect to-go snack. Pair this cheese with the Malbec from Argentina and you will be on cloud
The sausages and salami were also impeccable and complimented the different flavors of the cheeses. Try mixing it up by creating different varieties with the wines, cheeses and meats and I promise you by the end of the year you will have tried everything on the menu and have become a wine/cheese+meat plate expert.
Top of your visit with Veritas’ hand selected Almond Toffee, Mocha Crunch and Truffles for the perfect ending to a wine and dine night. Trust me, you don’t want to skip this step.
Oh, and did I also mention that Urban Crust comes every Thursday and brings its incredible pizzas to the wine room? Just another reason why you need to go to Veritas. If that doesn’t tempt you, what about 50% off glasses of wine on Mondays? Or how about its Epic Tasting event that occurs on the first Saturday of every month and offers a 15 wine lineup tasting for only $30?
This is exactly why Veritas is the definition of wine heaven, am I right or am I right?
Hope to see some familiar faces at Veritas soon!
(/especially on Mondays because I will for sure be there with my half price wine)
Remember, sip with care & happy tasting!
