Beautiful Makeup for this Spring

Spring is finally in the air and with it some beautiful warm weather. I always like to change my makeup up a bit to reflect the seasons and so I have been busting out more bright shades like corals and pinks. Below I’ll show you how to get this pretty, glowing springtime look.

 1. Apply your favorite facial lotion and primer and then use a luminous foundation like L’Oreal True Match Lumi to get a radiant, glowing look. You can either warm the product up with your fingers and apply it straight to the face or use a flattop or stippling brush to give a flawless airbrushed look.

 2. Use a bronzer 2 shades darker than your skin tone like NARS “Laguna” to bronze up the face or contour the temples, under the cheekbones and the jawline for the appearance of a slimmed down face and healthy sun-kissed look.

 3. Fill in the brows with a brow pencil like Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz to frame the face.

 4. Use a blush brush to apply a coral colored blush like Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity in “Glisten” to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards for a gorgeous, healthy appearance.

5. Use a flat shader brush or fingers to apply a shimmery white/champagne highlight like MAC “Shroom” just underneath the brow bone and next to the tear duct area. This will make the eyes appear brighter, more awake, and will clean up the arch of the eyebrow.

 6. Use a volumizing mascara like Too Faced “Better Than Sex” mascara to create beautiful, full lashes.

7. Apply a champagne highlighter like Benefit “Watts Up!” to the top of the cheekbones to emphasize and bring light to this area.

8. Dab a concealer 2 shades lighter than your skin tone like Maybelline Instant Age Rewind to your under eye area to brighten, conceal, and lift this area.

9. Apply a coral lipstick like NARS “Niagra” to the lips for a lovely springtime subtle pop of color.

10. Apply a black gel liner like Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner as close to the lash line as possible. I like to wing out my liner slightly to elongate the eyes.

11. Line outer portion of the lips with a pinky-nude lipliner like Jordana “Tawny”. This will give the lips more shape, make them appear fuller, and prevent the lipstick from bleeding.

Spring Break Playlist

Posted by on February 28, 2014 | No Comments »

Happy Friday Readers!!

I am beyond honored to be a part of SMUStyle’s first playlist. I would love to start by saying that music is a huge asset to one’s style. The way we walk, talk, dance, and dress is so similar to what we listen to whether we notice it or not. I’m not saying that if you listen to indie music you are a hipster or if you listen to rap you are super ghetto; but, artists we enjoy listening to often dress the way we like to dress or sing the tunes we love to let loose to! Music is not only one of my biggest passions, but is definitely an ongoing, growing lifestyle I hope to continue pursuing throughout my life and journalistic career. It is so important that we listen to what we love and discover new tracks that are similar to our diverse tastes. I thought it was only fair for our spring break playlist to reflect all genres that may appeal to our readers (even if I don’t listen to them myself hehe). So without further ado, I bring to you SMUStyle’s Spring Break Playlist!

“Riding Solo” to BEYOND Pedaling

Posted by on February 15, 2014 | No Comments »

I’m not going to lie, it had been quite a long time since I had been to a spinning class. Working out isn’t exactly my thing but, you do what you gotta do to stay fit (at least that’s what I tell myself to get through studio doors!) So, when I saw BEYOND Pedaling’s Valentine’s Day class special – they simply made an offer I could not refuse.

Their ever so punny “Riding Solo” themed Valentine’s Day class topped with a live DJ

not only sounded like fun, but was fun!

When I first walked into the dark studio room, saw the DJ stand next to the instructor bike stand along with my complimentary towel at my bike, I was a little nervous about being able to keep up with the other students who clearly seemed like pros by now. But once the DJ started bouncing with us to Hardwell, Zedd, and even a little Robyn – it was hard to not enjoy myself! I might have walked in tired, but I left almost too energetic to start my evening off the right way. After class I definitely considered telling them to change their name to Club Pedal!

With spring break right around the corner, I know everyone is working extra hard to get that Cabo-ready Spring Break bod and BEYOND Pedaling is definitely SMUstyle’s choice of studio to get you there! Believe me, you’ll be dying to go back after your first class!

Check out all of their available classes here!

And in case you were in the market for some more workout stuff…

I’ll be honest, I usually watch the Red Carpet hour before the award shows start and then…turn off the TV. The Grammys are always known for being the place to wear your sexiest or craziest get-up of Awards Season, but last night the stars stayed pretty tame in my opinion. Here are a few highlights of the night’s festivities.

Chrissy Teigen literally killed it. It may not be the most avant-garde or on-trend look on the red carpet, but this girl looked absolutely stunning in a blingy gown by Johanna Johnson. Everyone should be jealous of John Legend (her new hubby) right about now.

Katy Perry walked a fine line between being too theme-y with her Valentino dress from the most recent Couture collection shown just last week. Personally, I thought it was a hit. Perry is known for her eccentric and playful wardrobe, and I thought it was perfect for her.Screen Shot 2014-01-27 at 10.02.40 AMNever a huge Ciara fan, I would argue that she has never looked so beautiful. She reminded me a lot of Kate Hudson on the Red Carpet, with a perfect balance of effortless and glamorous all at the same time. This gown was custom Emilio Pucci.  She also gets a bonus +100 points for being one of the best dressed of the night while working around a pretty significant baby bump.

Props to Taylor Swift for looking so chic. It may not be the most exciting gown I’ve ever seen, but she looks amazing nonetheless. I also love how perfectly tailored her dress was, it really accentuated the streamlined feel. This gucci dress is actually made of chainmail, a welcome change to the amount of sequined metallics out there. Now that Little Tay is growing up I believe has a calling as the First Lady. I mean can’t you totally see it?!Screen Shot 2014-01-27 at 10.10.42 AM

Finally for some of the worst dressed ladies on the Red Carpet…

I think Paris Hilton may have teamed up with figure skater Johnny Weir to design this gown. Perhaps she found it fitting with the upcoming Winter Olympics next month? The hair really doesn’t help this look either, I’m scared to know the amount of hairspray that was used to make her hair stand up so that it looks like she is in a wind machine.

Rita Ora is usually one you can count on to rock some awesome outfits with unique style. But what was this dress. Seriously. I think she just didn’t have a dress the day before and had this hanging in her closet. Not only is it the identical color of Frankenstein, but the silhouette is awful! My mother wears less conservative clothing. I also despised the color of her hair with the green, as well as the sandals which were just so random. Screen Shot 2014-01-27 at 10.18.49 AM

Beautiful as a butterfly (Paris couture 2014)

Posted by on January 24, 2014 | No Comments »

As the Paris fashion week couture shows are wrapping up, neutral elements have been hitting main stage. Incredible craftsmanship is what separates haute couture from the rest of fashion. Relying on modern ideas to stay relevant. Couture usually reflects the seasons coming up. In this case…Spring. Natural landscapes and butterflies have been trending in the shows like Valentino, Chanel and Gaultier.

Peter Pilotto For Target

Target has done it again! Contracting top designers to add to their already impressive portfolio. The London based designer has put together a collection of casual tops and skirts, along with blazers and a-line dresses. The bold pattern clashes that Pilotto is known for are paired with color blocking textiles. Here are some of the looks that will be in Target stores February 9th.

Rush Week: Coats Under $100

Posted by on January 10, 2014 | No Comments »

Even though we are all aware of the Ice Age that is currently taking over the North East and luckily left Dallas already, if you are anything like I am… you’ve checked the Dallas forecast for next week about 10 times each day, and are contemplating how to avoid freezing your butt off in addition to looking like the abominable snowman. With these coats under $100, you’re guaranteed to still show off your cocktail attire or even dress up your snappy casual! (P.S. most of these coats are on sale, so expedite like there is no tomorrow ladies ;) )

Also, the great thing about all of these jackets are that they are closet staples. You can wear them multiple times with out it being obvious!
