DJ Lucy Wrubel’s Mix Of The Month

She has deejayed for Cavalli and the Ferragamos. She has played at Cowboys Stadium. She has appeared everywhere from France to Waco. She was named one of the Top 10 deejays in Dallas by D Magazine and has been featured in PaperCity Magazine and on DailyCandy. She is DJ Lucy Wrubel. Juegen Teller + Ezra Petronio at Dallas Contemporary

I finally made the time to checkout Juergen Teller’s “Man with Banana” and Ezra Petronio’s “Bold & Beautiful and Le Pavillon” exhibits at Dallas Contemporary. If you aren’t familiar with who Juergen Teller is, then I recommend picking up any issue of Vogue, W or Harpers from the past decade and flipping to a Marc Jacobs ad. Yes, Teller is the artistic mastermind behind the iconic sepia-toned Marc Jacobs ads that feature inimitable images such as a stark-faced Dakota Fanning, the infamous Vivienne Westwood posing with a banana and Victoria Beckham stuffed in a shopping bag, to name a few. Ezra Petronio is the editor-chief and creative director at Self Service magazine, a bi-annual, fashion and lifestyle magazine based out of Paris.

The famed fashion photographer’s work will be on exhibit at Dallas Contemporary until August 21st. Admission is always FREE.

DMA presents Coco Chanel lecture

The Dallas Museum of Art hosts weekly Thursday night lectures, but this week’s topic of discussion particularly caught our eye — Coco Chanel.

Rhonda Garelick, Professor of English at the University of Nebraska and a well-known scholar and writer on performance, literature, fashion, and cultural politics, will explore Coco Chanel’s influence on fashion as well as in literary and artistic circles in Paris.

Why Coco you may ask? Well, five rooms of Chanel’s Mediterranean Villa La Pausa were re-created at the Dallas Museum of Art to house the Wendy and Emery Reves Collection of impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern European art.

The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free for DMA members.

SMUStyle Campus Editor, Meg Jones

A couple months ago, we began a search for the perfect SMUStyle Campus Editor. Our goal? Find someone to work with SMUStyle’s stellar team of bloggers, wrangle and increase our daily content and act as the face of SMUStyle on campus and beyond. Dozens of interviews later — we can’t say enough of the wildly talented pool of people we met with — we found the one.

Meet: Meg Jones. This SMU junior is a journalism and advertising major and plans to start the fashion media minor in the fall. Meg has spent three summers interning with the features editor at Vanity Fair, has contributed to The Daily Campus, The Daily Mustang, and The Daily Update. Aside from her editorial experience, Meg is well-traveled (she studied abroad in Paris this fall), well-read (her fave tomes include Jane Austen’s Emma and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald) and has a great sartorial eye (she credits her classic style to the casual ease of icon Kate Moss and the timeless elegance of Chanel). On a day off, keep an eye out for Meg shopping Highland Park Village or indulging in a bubbly brunch with friends. Also keep an eye out for Meg on campus, as she’s always on the lookout for new bloggers, stories and fashionable inspiration. Congrats, Meg!

SMU graduate students spins as DJ Zoo

A rather dapper DJ spinned at this past weekend’s SMU Retail Club Fashion Show at Meadows Museum, who is this well-dressed Dallas music-maker? SMUstyle’s Darby Radcliff caught up with Justin Smith aka DJ Zoo and gives us the deets behind this SMU grad student’s beats.

SMUstyle: Tell us about yourself?

DJ Zoo: I was born in Australia, and then lived in different places in Europe, then I moved to Austin, Texas when I was six years old. I went to UT Austin for undergrad and studied corporate communications and business.

SMUstyle: You’re at SMU now for grad school, what are you studying?

DJ Zoo: I am getting my MBA in Finance.

SMUstyle: So, how did you get into deejaying?

DJ Zoo: I got into deejaying when I was at UT Austin working as a barback at a bar on 6^th street. Everynight I worked at the bar, I would help set up the dj equipment and began to play around on the equipment and found a true passion for it.

SMUstyle: Your Dj name is DJ Zoo, how did you come up with this?

DJ Zoo: In college I modeled and my friends called me Zoolander, so I got the name from that movie.

SMUstyle: What inspires you to deejay and what are your musical inspirations?

DJ Zoo: I get inspired to dj because I enjoy giving my audience a cultural experiences at my venues when I play eso-teric music, which is non-mainstream music. I also like to play Indie, nu disco, and Euro house music to give Texas music that they normally don’t hear.

SMUstyle: Who is your favorite artist(s)?

DJ Zoo: My favorite artist is Cut-Copy and my favorite dj is a dj duo called The Twelves, who are producers of off the wall type music.

SMUstyle: What has been your favorite DJ gig in your career?

DJ Zoo: My favorite dj gig was at The Drake in Houston, TX in 2007 when I played for 1500 people in a ballroom. It was the biggest crowd I have ever played for and it was a special moment in my career.

SMUStyle is officially looking for a Campus Editor to oversee the blog and act as a campus/Dallas ambassador for SMUStyle. SMUStyle Campus Editor Job Description:
• Overseeing the team of bloggers — communicating with them regarding content, questions, delegating story ideas, managing story ideas.
• Editing submitted content for grammar, punctuation, style etc.
• Responsible for posting blogs in a timely fashion
• Work very closely with Sarah and Christina to execute the SMUStyle vision/concept
• Attend events that are happening around Dallas
• Manage Twitter and Facebook — can include appointing a social networking person if applicable
• Be a campus/Dallas ambassador for SMUStyle. Be the campus face of the blog.
• Check the SMUStyle e-mail 24/7
• Write weekly blogs for SMUStyle
• Participate in monthly meetings with Christina and/or Sarah
• Conduct mandatory monthly or bi-monthly meetings with the team of bloggers
• Hire Fall 2011 bloggers — to begin hiring process in May with an orientation meeting in the Fall for first-year students.

Thursday Nights at the DMA

Dallas is full of cultural opportunities, but often times as students we tend to neglect these out-of-classroom learning opportunities our fabulously chic city has to offer. This year why not make a resolution to explore and experience art! The Dallas Museum of Art hosts events every Thursday night from 5 to 9 pm free for students with an SMU I.D.
Sip a glass of wine and listen to live jazz in the atrium or wander about the museum and marvel at its masterpieces. The options are endless and let us mention it AGAIN it’s FREE … for us at least!

This Thursday come by and see the 3rd annual Tenor Madness Concert honoring Marchel Ivery.

Dallas Art Fair

I had the pleasure of attending the Dallas Art Fair this weekend and snapped some pics of my favorite artwork. I’m not an art expert by any means, but can appreciate beauty and creativity.
The Andy Warhol had a piece at the fair in the PanAmerican Gallery. You could purchase “Perrier Bottles” for a cool $250,000 (aka 6 years at SMU).
This image “Empire” shot by Matthew Porter in 2010 caught by eye in Dallas’ Marty Walker Gallery. The photographer teaches at the American Center for Photography in NYC and that image was shot in Brooklyn.

William Campbell Contemporary Art out of Fort Worth had this fascinating piece by John Holt Smith called “Sequence #3.” The artist retrieved this image first by taking a picture of a field of poppies. Then he stretched and zoomed the image time after time until he was enraptured with this particular color sequence, which he then replicated with acrylic enamel on an aluminum canvas.
This acrylic on canvas painting from Dallas gallery Dunn & Brown Contemporary was a mesmerizing optical illusion with a 3-D effect on the eyes. “Spectrum #12″ by Susie Rosmarin.
Former Texan, now New Yorker Rachel Hovnanian captured the stereotypes and conceptions of beauty with a sense of humor and seriousness. Her exhibit “The Power and Burden of Beauty” made the trip down to Texas to be viewed by her toughest critics.
This foam pink thing as I referred to it all weekend is a sculpture by Tony Feher from the D’Amelio Terras Gallery. Its proper name is “Blossom” and it is made out of extruded polyestyrene you can find at a hardware store like Home Depot for building materials. Its simple, unexpected and just makes you smile. Can you imagine having it just chilling in your living room?
