Bill Cunningham New York to open at Dallas Angelika

April 3, 2011 by

Whether you like fashion or not, I highly recommend you take the time to see Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary on New York Times Fashion and Social Photographer Bill Cunningham.  I had the opportunity to see the inspiring film a year ago during a single Dallas screening at The Dallas International Film Festival and  to this day I am still raving about it! The film is absolutely charming and takes you inside the day-to-day life of the adorable 80+ year-old Cunningham.

If you like fashion or photography or film or simply just appreciate amazing individuals then take time to check-out the flick.

The documentary opens at the Dallas Angelika Friday, April 8.

SMU Fashion Media Minor Info Session

March 8, 2011 by

I’m sure by now, if you are a fashion-obsessed SMU student like myself and a lot of our readers, you’ve heard about the new minor on campus — Fashion Media. Although the exact details of the minor haven’t been fully revealed, (we’re assuming some combo of photography, j-school and art history classes), rumors of the long-awaited addition to the university’s curriculum  have been circulating circa September of last semester.

Good news:  All of your questions about what SMU has in-store for its first “fashion”-titled degree will be answered when we return from spring break. The faculty that is spearheading the new program’s course-load is hosting an information session on Friday, March 25 at 2pm in the journalism school’s Convergence Newsroom also known as Umphrey Lee 284.

SMU freshman presents at New York Fashion Week

February 21, 2011 by

SMU freshman and international fashion designer Kira Plastinina presented her Fall 2011 collection LUBLU Kira Plastinina at New York Fashion Week this past Thursday. The young designer’s high-end collection was sleek, modern and sophisticated a far cry from her earlier designs as a pre-teen (I actually went to her old boutique on Robertson Blvd in LA 5 years ago — the store was mega-girly, sparkley and pink). I just returned from New York Fashion Week, where I attended her presentation and had the opportunity to see the collection up-close. I was surprised at how elegant and well-made LUBLU was and I honestly could see myself in many of the pieces. My favorite looks included a chic nude silk jumpsuit, a bold red strapless tea-length dress and a fierce leather and fur frock.

I’m dying to-try on and shop the line. We’ll keep you posted on what Dallas-area stores pick-up the line. Neimans? Stanley Korshak? Tootsies? Get on this and support a Dallas/SMU girl!

New York Fashion Week

February 15, 2011 by

Hey SMUstyle readers!

I’m currently at New York Fashion Week — right now I’m actually blogging from my room at The Standard Hotel. I’ve been attending shows since Friday and wanted to share some of my snapshots from inside and outside the tents at Lincoln Center and the various off-site show locations.

Sorry about the resolution in these iPhone pics, if you are in search of more professional images from the shows I recommend looking here and here. I’m off to my next show, J. Mendel — if you’re interested in more to-the-minute coverage refer to my Twitter.

Where all the magic happens, well most of it. Lincoln Center, home of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

I took this from the seat of my very first show, Perry Ellis. The show started at 11 am on Friday, I got there on time, but little did I know the shows typically kicks-off at least half an hour late! So many people to seat and seats to fill! Perry Ellis was an amazing show, think all neutrals (charcoals, tans, olives and camels) in warm wools and  twills.

I sat 2nd row here, but the shots are still a blur — the models move so fast and the lights are so bright! This collection was phenomenal, bright solid colors, quality fabrics and the cuts were baggy yet tailored. The designs were sophisticated, yet carefree and wearable. I would wear every piece!

January 5, 2011 by

Our PR friend Jessica at Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas just tipped us off that tomorrow is LAST CALL. If you aren’t familiar with NM Last Call, all I can say is it’s only the best sale of the season. I could go on and on about all of the amazing deals I have scored at the blowout sale in the past… one time I found Chanel flats for $250 — enough said!

The sale starts tomorrow and goes ’til the 12th.
