May 3, 2014 by

I have always found it interesting to see what celebrities love concerning beauty products. I mean, they have all the best makeup artists and skin care specialists constantly at their fingertips working to make them look perfect. They must learn a lot from these professionals and so they can easily discover the best products out there. I have picked a few stars in order share with you their favorite products that make them red carpet ready.

15 Beauty & Makeup Hacks Every Woman Should Know

May 2, 2014 by

Screen Shot 2014-05-04 at 10.31.53 PM

Since my time as a beauty writer for SMU Style is coming to an end, (I’m graduating this May!) I thought it would be a good idea to show readers of this website where they can find more of my writings and musings about everything to do with beauty and makeup from here on out. I also have my own own blog, The Beauty Book,( and so you can find me there for more beauty advice. Below is a sample of one of my recent posts from my blog–I hope you like it! 🙂

1.) Make lipstick last longer: Lightly cover your mouth with a tissue and apply some translucent powder over the top. You can find out exactly how to do this on this blog post of mine.

2.) DIY Gel liner: Place your kohl pencil liner under a flame (you can use a lighter, candle, etc.) for 2 seconds. Let it cool for another few seconds and apply as usual. The result will be gel-like in appearance and much darker.

3.) Lipgloss running out? Place the closed lipgloss tube in a cup of warm water for 10 minutes. The heat will melt gloss stuck on the sides of the container and cause them to drip to the bottom so you can use every last drop.

4.) Get extra curly lashes: Use your hair dryer to heat your lash curler for a few seconds and then curl your lashes as normal for an extra curled boost.

5.) Vibrant eyeshadow: Apply a white cream base before applying you favorite bright

eye shadow to intensify the color.

6.) Fake bigger lips: Line your lips with lipliner before applying lipstick and then dap a shimmery light eyeshadow in the center to create the illusion of a bigger pout.

7.) Quick blush on the go: Apply a dash of lipstick to your cheeks and blend out with fingers.

8.) Exfoliating body scrub: Mix one part coconut oil with two parts sugar for a scrub that will leave your legs silky smooth.

9.) Out of shaving cream? Use conditioner or coconut oil for nutritious hydration.

10.) Cheap blotting papers: Next time you hit up starbucks for your coffee fix, grab a bunch of their brown napkins. Apparently they work amazing as blotting papers!

11.) Preserve volume in hair: Tie your hair into a top-knot at night to keep volume at the root of the hair.

12.) Make eyes appear bigger: Line your waterline with a white kohl pencil instead of black to make them pop.

13.) Rip proof tights: Lightly spray your tights with hairspray to avoid rips and tears.

14.) Foil your eyeshadow: Intensify the look of your eyeshadow by dabbing your brush in some water or eye drops prior to application.

15.) Exfoliating face mask: Mix baking soda and water together so that it forms a paste. Apply to face and wait 10 minutes before washing off. You can find out more about this amazing DIY face mask on this blog post of mine.

If you want to stand out as a queen bee or royal this summer you should probably check out MAC’s new collection by Lorde. Soon, everyone will be able to rock her exact signature purple lip and winged out eyeliner.

Screen Shot 2014-05-02 at 11.09.13 AM

So far, a sneak peak of the deep purple lipstick called “Pure Heroine” and a black liquid eyeliner pen called “Rapidblack”have been unveiled as part of the collection. Names for the products were inspired by her debut album also titled “Pure Herione.”

When interviewed about the collection, Lorde expressed her excitement about working with a brand that she has used since she was very young and that her first MAC lipstick was “Snob” which all of her girlfriends used when they were 14.

The entire collection will be available on June 5th and internationally in July.

Makeup for Beautiful Photographs Every Time

April 30, 2014 by

Screen Shot 2014-05-04 at 10.13.21 PM

1.) Wear a foundation without SPF– While it is recommended to wear SPF to protect skin from the harmful rays of the sun, it often creates flashback in photos. Flashback makes your face appear much whiter than the rest of your body and casts an unnatural looking glare. This is a very common occurrence in flash photography so ditch the SPF for your next photo shoot for best results

2.) Don’t use glitter or overly shimmery products– OK Kesha, we are all born with some glitter in our veins but glitter and shimmery products do not usually photograph well. Most often, glitter doesn’t reflect light in an attractive way, it looks oddly pixelated, or it hardly picks up on camera. Using too much shimmery highlight usually just translates as oily skin in photos. Matte eyeshadows, bronzers and blushes photograph beautifully and so they are the best to use when taking photos.

3.) Powder your face– If the skin is even slightly dewy or oily, the camera will emphasize this big time. Powdering your skin is important for photographs so that your skin looks even all over and doesn’t look overly shiny.

4.) Wear lipliner, lipstick AND lipgloss- The best and most beautiful photos I have seen of my clients (and other people’s too) are the ones where the woman is wearing all three of these products. Lipliner makes the lips appear fuller and more shapely. Layering lipstick also gives the effect of fuller, more luscious lips. Marilyn Monroe’s makeup artist used to layer lipsticks for this sole reason and this gave the beautiful star her famous pout in photos. Topping off the lips with a lipgloss will bring beautiful added light and dimension to the lips. Of course, some people may be uncomfortable wearing that much product so a simple lipgloss with good color payoff could suffice.

5.) Wear false eyelashes- Eyelashes seem to disappear into nothing in photographs and so I highly recommend wearing a set of false eyelashes when getting pictures taken. False eyelashes photograph looking much more natural than you would expect and and really opens up the eye area. Your eyes will not only look bigger, but your lashes will look perfectly full and gorgeous.

6.) Apply blush and bronzer more liberally– While you don’t want to look like Ronald Mcdonald or a burnt lobster, blush and bronzer are often very difficult to pick up in photos. For photo shoots specifically, I recommend to use a much heavier hand when applying these two products so that you look radiant and healthy with some nice color to the face. If you are going out for the night with friends and you know photos will be taken, apply blush and bronzer heavier than usual but not so heavy that it looks unnatural in person.

Beautiful Makeup for this Spring

April 24, 2014 by

Screen Shot 2014-04-24 at 10.06.06 PM

Spring is finally in the air and with it some beautiful warm weather. I always like to change my makeup up a bit to reflect the seasons and so I have been busting out more bright shades like corals and pinks. Below I’ll show you how to get this pretty, glowing springtime look.

 1. Apply your favorite facial lotion and primer and then use a luminous foundation like L’Oreal True Match Lumi to get a radiant, glowing look. You can either warm the product up with your fingers and apply it straight to the face or use a flattop or stippling brush to give a flawless airbrushed look.

 2. Use a bronzer 2 shades darker than your skin tone like NARS “Laguna” to bronze up the face or contour the temples, under the cheekbones and the jawline for the appearance of a slimmed down face and healthy sun-kissed look.

 3. Fill in the brows with a brow pencil like Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz to frame the face.

 4. Use a blush brush to apply a coral colored blush like Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity in “Glisten” to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards for a gorgeous, healthy appearance.

5. Use a flat shader brush or fingers to apply a shimmery white/champagne highlight like MAC “Shroom” just underneath the brow bone and next to the tear duct area. This will make the eyes appear brighter, more awake, and will clean up the arch of the eyebrow.

 6. Use a volumizing mascara like Too Faced “Better Than Sex” mascara to create beautiful, full lashes.

7. Apply a champagne highlighter like Benefit “Watts Up!” to the top of the cheekbones to emphasize and bring light to this area.

8. Dab a concealer 2 shades lighter than your skin tone like Maybelline Instant Age Rewind to your under eye area to brighten, conceal, and lift this area.

9. Apply a coral lipstick like NARS “Niagra” to the lips for a lovely springtime subtle pop of color.

10. Apply a black gel liner like Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner as close to the lash line as possible. I like to wing out my liner slightly to elongate the eyes.

11. Line outer portion of the lips with a pinky-nude lipliner like Jordana “Tawny”. This will give the lips more shape, make them appear fuller, and prevent the lipstick from bleeding.

5 Minute Makeup for Women on the Go

April 8, 2014 by

You sleepily roll over, yawn and pry your eyes open. Something’s wrong. It’s way to light outside your window. Your eyes dart over to your alarm clock, sitting there with a pretense of innocence–but what it reads is DOOM. You’re late (for the billionth time this week) for that class with that professor who doesn’t particularly throw rainbows and flowers of happiness your way for this very reason. You mutter a stream of profanities as you rush to appear somewhat presentable before you leap out the door like Seabiscuit.

Whether it’s for school or work, most people can relate to this. We have all had those days where getting ready in time seems like an impossible feat.

With this simple 5 step process, getting ready in 5 minutes is a synch.

Screen Shot 2014-03-31 at 6.30.24 PM

1.) A BB cream or tinted moisturizer like Origins Vitazing is a great and quick way to apply multiple steps at one time to the face. Origins Vitazing not only moisturizes and brightens the skin, but it customizes to match the exact color of your skin and gives a light, natural coverage. You can quickly apply this using your hands directly to the face. Your fingers will warm up the product nicely so that it blends perfectly into your skin.

2.) Whether you’re in a rush or not, filling in the brows is an important step that can totally pull together a look and frames the face. Anastasia Beverley Hills Brow Wiz is an amazing, award-winning retractable eyebrow pencil with a spoolie on the other end so that you can quickly comb through and fill in your brows. Use short, check-mark like strokes to fill in the brows quickly and give the natural, hair-like appearance.

3.) A long-wearing cream eyeshadow like Maybelline Color Tattoo is a wonderful way to add depth and interest to the eye area without taking too long. Just use your fingers or a brush to sweep the cream eyeshadow directly onto the lid and in one stroke you will have beautiful eyeshadow to compliment any eye color. My favorite color is Bad to the Bronze.

4.) Since you are fighting for time, you will need a mascara that both lengthens and volumizes to bring the most definition to the eye area. Benefit They’re Real Mascara is incredible to do just that and has rave reviews from beauty bloggers everywhere! (It’s one of my personal faves too!)

5.) For the power of a lip balm and lipstick combined, I present to you Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butters. These babies have awesome pigmentation and hydration and won’t overpower the rest of the natural, quick makeup you have applied. A great color for this spring and summer is Juicy Papaya, an orange-coral color that is very on trend for this season!

Beauty Talk: Style Me Twice Blogger Reveals Beauty Routine

March 27, 2014 by

As a huge fan and regular follower of the fabulous blog, Style Me Twice, I was thrilled to interview one of its writers. Style Me Twice focuses on the lives, fashion and beauty interests of two women from different style capitals–Dallas and Los Angeles. One of these fashion mavens happens to be our very own Kaylah from SMU. Her interview reveals her tips for how busy women everywhere can maintain a simple, yet beautiful beauty regimen.

1.) Describe your typical, every-day beauty routine.

“As a full time student, dancer, and blogger, it’s easy to skip out on my beauty routine for the sake of saving time. Because every minute counts, I have to keep my makeup clean, simple, and quick so that I can start seizing the day as soon as it begins. I keep a simple ten minute beauty routine that allows me to maximize my day and amplify my every day look without sacrificing time or beauty!”

2.) What is the one beauty product that you couldn’t live without?

Bare Minerals Prime Time Primer! This primer is light yet it keeps my makeup in place and feeling fresh through 10 am classes, 1o’clock blog shoots and 10 p.m dance rehearsals.”

3.) What is your favorite brand of makeup? Do you prefer drugstore or high-end?

“I love Bare-Minerals! Because I’m a huge fan of the natural look, I love any kind of make-up that gives me all the coverage I need but doesn’t mask my skin.  Because I splurge on Bare minerals foundation, primer, bronzer, and blush, I like to do my wallet a favor and fill my make-up bag with drugstore products like Maybelline’s unstoppable eyeliner and Great Lash mascara.”

4.) Do you have any favorite beauty bloggers or Youtube beauty gurus that you follow regularly?

“I’m a huge fan of Beauty By JJ. She taught me to use a curling wand and the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette, both which I now love and use almost every day.”

5.) How important or integral is a beauty routine in your life?

“As cheesy as it may sound, my beauty routine has become a part of daily morning ritual.  My life is so busy that taking just 10 minutes at the beginning of my day to slow down and take time for me is so important. Not to mention adding a little bit of glamour and shine makes you feel fabulous and ready to take on the day.”

6.) Is there someone in your life that is a style/beauty inspiration you?

“My mom has impeccable taste. She taught me that less is more which is something that I apply to my style and my makeup.”

Don’t forget to check out all of Kaylah’s style and beauty tips on Style Me Twice!
